In a lot of English-speaking countries “Klapa” sounds like a sexually transmitted disease that makes you itch down there. Klap s Mora makes an effort to be as stirring with their song “Mizerja”…but sadly it’s only left me scratching my head.

I’d like to say this song has a soul, and I appreciate the ethno-folkish sound. But honestly: Croatia needs to up its game. Even the promotional photo (above) smacks of mediocrity. Can the EBU please get them a stylist?

I don’t have gold
to decorate you with it
Only these two arms
to hug your soul

Oh misery, you’re as hard as rock
Oh misery, you’re like two drops of wine
I have nothing but faith and a little bit
of pure love

Oh beautiful rose of mine,
For you I will live
And the last piece of dried old bread
I’ll share with you

Oh misery, you’re as hard as rock
Oh misery, you’re like two drops of wine
I have nothing but faith and a little bit
of pure love

Croatian lyrics:

Zlata niman da
te njime okitim
Samo ove ruke dvi
da ti dusu zagrlim

Ej mizerja ka tvrda si stina
Ej mizerja ka dvi kapi vina
Nemam nista, samo viru
I bokun ciste jubavi

Ruzo moja lipa
za te zivit cu
I zadnju koru suvog kruva
s tobom dilit cu

Ej mizerja ka tvrda si stina
Ej mizerja ka dvi kapi vina
Nemam nista, samo viru
I bokun ciste jubavi

I think these guys did very good job. The song is amazing. It is a Croatian Song with a beautiful music and lyrics. Do you know that this kind of music is in the list of UNESCO world heritage ? Eurovision Song Contest is an international music contest. There is no point to put them just “pop music” and make it another “talent show” which is nearly every channel. I like to here special and different songs. I think “Croatia” was just different and “special” this year. And I don’t care if they didn’t win. I like them still. Well… Read more »

The suits Klapa sa Mora wore are the official Knights of Croatia costumes, worn as an honour and by special privilege. I found it refreshing to hear such high quality four part harmony. The other songs by comparison sound like the usual generic pop Euro.

Definitely these guys pimped up their outfits for the show. Gossips had it that they were wearing hand-made coats with silver and glitter woven into it, coming to them from a Croat monastery at the price of 10.000 Euro each. So “I don’t have gold” isn’t really true. Is it that those guys failed because of a credibility problem? Or maybe too many folks were hearing the lyrics “misera si stina” and thought that this was a song about the “miserable Sistine Chapel”. Who knows but God?

It’s Croatia being Croatia, which means picking amazing songs and somehow making sure they won’t pass to the semifinals. They’ve been doing this at least since 2010.

It’s a bit baffling alright. It starts out sounding like the signature tune for a breakfast show they might perform in later, as if the recording wasn’t cropped in the right place. The vocals slide in with a similarly unintrusive melody that takes a couple of listens to figure out. Bit of excitement with a wild chord change near the end. Well, kudos to Croatia for skipping the Sponge cake with ethno-sprinkles approach and going for a whole slab of something truly their own. The arrangement and production have clearly been refined very carefully to present a specific sound, so… Read more »

Bit of a hit and miss on this one. I really can’t imagine seeing this entry trying to connect with non Eurovision fans that would be watching the first semi-final.
