Serbia, Moje 3, 4

Last night the Wiwi Jury—our in-house panel of music un-professionals—headed to Belgrade to review Moje 3’s Eurovision 2013 song “Ljubav je svuda”. Was love really everywhere as the title suggests? Or did the song trigger boredom and apathy instead? Read on to find out…

Wiwi: The first time I heard this I rolled my eyes and pressed pause on YouTube. I couldn’t cope with what I thought was one big excuse to dress Sara up in a pleather devil’s costume to show off her figure. But after listening to the song without watching the YouTube video above, I realized that this is my jam, y’all. These ladies know how to sing, they harmonize like no other on the la-la-la-la-la-la-la segment, and they look amazing doing it. The acoustic version shows off their vocal abilities even better. “Ljubav je svuda” is a catchy club number with an anthemic quality: watch out for fist pumps on the dance floor. It’s a triple threat from Serbia, and I have already fallen victim to their charms!

Score: 8/10

moje_3_1+foto+Slobodan+Saric+Photopress+RTSVebooboo:  Three’s company too. The fact that these three young stars can put aside their egos and share the stage is moving enough, but add to that amazing team charisma, hilarious facial expressions, and solid vocals and you’ve made me a happy camper. I’m always a sucker for a pop song (yes, all of you can hate me for that), and this one manages to bring the audience along even if we don’t understand what the hell the three are singing about. Singing last in the first semi-final, they’re almost a shoe-in for the Final, and I hope that’s the case.

Score: 7/10

Alexander: The first time I listened to this song, I didn’t like it. The girls seemed to be screeching a really generic melody. I originally thought that it was a huge downgrade from Zeljko’s entry last year. However, once I understood the lyrics, I came to appreciate the song more. Nevena is having a conflict, and Sara represents the devil side while Mirna represents the angel side, both giving conflicting advice. It’s not an original idea, but it’s an interesting concept to base a Eurovision entry on. Will this qualify? Yes. But honestly, Montenegro is stronger than Serbia this year…

Score: 6.5/10

HK Dick: I wonder if there term “Mutton dressed as lamb” translates into Serbian? These three girls strut the stage trying to act all sexy but have as much erotic appeal as a bag of fish and chips. Ignoring their attempts at sassiness, the song is all rather jolly but is neither a winner nor a damp squib. I suspect they will make the final but on Sunday will be back in Belgrade pulling pints at their local.

Score: 7/10

Bogdan: It’s not a bad song and I get the trio gimmick – the straight men will hopefully still be awake during this portion of the show. But the live vocal performance is uneven and therefore distracting to say the least. Hopefully they will improve it by their semi-final, because the song has a lot of qualities, plus I like that the ladies perform in their native language. The pimp slot of the semi-final will surely help Serbia advance to the Final, but, once there, it won’t get as far as it did last year…

Score: 6/10

Mr Häggkvist: Not many people are excited about this, but I do love it. These girls can sing which the most important thing here. This is a singing contest and not a Fashion Show or who’s the biggest entertainer…  I’m obsessed with Nevena. Serbia doesn’t make many mistakes at Eurovision. They always try different styles and to me this works perfectly.

Score: 7/10

Deban: “Ljubav je svuda” sounds like a medley of three bad songs that deliberately omits a chorus. Who voted them in? Where’s Zeljko? I know he’s disappointed with his third position last year, but he could have participated as a songwriter. Eurovision isn’t always about winning. It’s also about the submission of quality entries to a global television audience of 170 million viewers. No amount of promotional tours would redeem this entry. When SVT were thinking about controlling the running order, this was the act they had in mind. For the handful of fans Moje 3 have harnessed in the Baltics, I have some crucial advice for you. Enjoy them in the semis, because this trio ain’t advancing.

Score: 1.5/10

The Wiwi Jury Verdict: 6.14/10

– Miss Banks didn’t like the costumes, they were too over the top… – Mirna & Nevena are very powerful vocals and great potentials [who says different is either musically uneducated or completely deaf]… Sara is only an entertainer [that’s why she doesn’t have much singing parts in the song]… – I put myself in a position of a person who doesn’t speak Serbian and I understand it all seems soooo confusing and all but once you learn the lyrics and figure out what they are talking about, it starts making sense… – This Deban guy is a piece of… Read more »

Not bad. I wish they didn’t act out/dance every line though.

I hope they do something about the stage production – the movement of the supporting singers was more of a hindrance than an asset. It was an amateur performance. And now to the song …

It’s a pretty good song, but certainly not a title contender this year.

It’s funny how so many say they hated the song the first time they heard it, but then … after listening to it many times/getting a translation of the lyrics/seeing this and that version … they quite like it. Eurovision is all about first impressions. Even if I don’t count the horrible choreography and cheap outfits, the song doesn’t do a whole lot for me. The chorus sounds to me like they’re practicing their scales, and the vocals are uneven at best. With improved staging and a better day vocally than at the Serbian final, and considering they were given… Read more »

“For the handful of fans Moje 3 have harnessed in the Baltics” It’s the Balkans. If “Deban” can’t get that straight how can his judgement be trusted. For those criticizing the outfits and choreography: those weren’t the girls’ ideas but others who chose that for them. So people here assuming the girls were “trying” to push their sex appeal or show off their figures: they are blaming the wrong people. You’d have to blame those who actually decided on their outfits and the choreographer/s behind it. In Malmo they will have different outfits and choreography. They will have several backup… Read more »

First time I listened/saw this song I hated it BECAUSE these girls are dressing up in cheap bimbo outfits and dance such a passé nonsexy dance. However, when you see their video in english and with normal getup the whole thing transforms into good pop. If these girls can actually understand that less is more and that they look better without the sharade…..and maybe sing in english so everyone can understand the lyrics, then they have a good shot at topping the finalé.

Cheap synthesizer, poor live vocals (at least at the national final), and a tune that sounds like an extremely weak version of something you’d hear from Morning Musume. Probably my least favorite entry in the contest. Why couldn’t they have just sent Zeljko again? Ludak Kao Ja would’ve been great!

Well done Deban for telling the truth.

Mix the Spice Girls with the clothing rack of a sex shop I know (modesty prevents me revelaing more) and the contents of a box of fondant fancies and you have the visual impact of this one. Vocals are strong but the song goes nowhere really. Poppy and arresting, and I see the ‘conflict’ point, but I was left thinking ‘pick a spot and stick to it’ as all the moving seemed to add little. Not my favourite, but not the worst.
