The Sugababes may still be on a prolonged hiatus, but Jade Ewen is certainly keeping herself busy. Fresh from her recent appearance on “Splash!”, Jade has teamed up with UK trance act Lost Witness as a guest vocalist on their new track “Fly”.

It’s a notable departure from the R&B-infused pop of the Sugababes. But is it a step in the right direction? The song lacks both the sass of her Sugababe hits and the raw emotion of “It’s My Time”. Worse, it is devoid of hooks: After several listens I’m still struggling to hum the tune. But perhaps the track’s biggest crime is its gross underuse of Jade’s voice. Anyone who saw her 2009 Eurovision performance knows that she has a voice which is destined to soar. Instead it is drowned out by the incessant beat.

Mutya Keisha Siobhan, a.k.a. the 3 original Sugababes, have an album launch looming. Could this be Jade’s attempt to re-establish herself as a solo artist? If so she needs to try harder.
