Emmelie de Forest—the winner of Eurovision 2013—has finally released the official video for “Only Teardrops”.
Appropriately enough, it shows Miss de Forest in the woods, voguing and rolling around and generally looking very expensive. Apparently wood nymphs have class and very skilled stylists. As glossy and attractive as the video is, it feels somewhat derivative. Last year’s Eurovision winner—Loreen from neigboring Sweden—also filmed her official video outdoors in a similarly verdant setting. Emmelie seems to have a thing for the “Euphoria” singer. You’ll remember that Emmelie followed in Loreen’s footsteps by not wearing shoes on stage at Eurovision. Of course, no one has a monopoly on shooting outdoors and choosing not to wear shoes, so cheers to Emmelie for doing her thing even if someone else has already done it.
A bigger gripe I have with the video is that it splices in footage of the real-life Emmelie. Rather than telling a story about a character that resonates fully with the song’s themes of love and loss, the video tells a story about Emmelie herself. It veers off course by showing Emmelie celebrating after winning Dansk Melodi Grand Prix. Those vingettes render thoughtful lyrics—”how many times can we win and lose”—into something literal, rather than letting them speak to the victors and vanquished in terms of romance, politics, and environmentalism as the songwriters had hoped. Booooo. They done dumbed it down y’all!
In any case, you can watch the official video on DR’s web site. We’ll embed the video when it’s released on YouTube tomorrow.

The video is so boring! Here again she tried to copy Loreen. It’s Emily in the grass of the forest!
Are those supposed to be clouds of tear gas?
Tbh, I can’t say I’m impressed.
It’s UGLY
It’s simply Emmelie in THE Forest! 😀
The copycat strikes again.
The hype from this years winner is just not that big!
I think its all about orginality here and everything is so predictable with Miss Emmelie….its like she is an actor in a new movie, where everybody already knows what the script is all about, and what is the fun about that?
Right..absolutly nothing:)
