Every Eurovision there are results that leave you wondering how some act ended up so low (Pastora Soler should have been 2nd in 2012), or how they ended up so high (Buranovskiye Babushki should never  have made it out of the semi-final). So here we have the five largest “what the hell was Europe thinking” results from 2013.

1. Israel

Moran did a beautiful job singing an incredible song. And 14th in the semi-final? 14th? Behind Bulgaria & Switzerland? Behind Armenia & Hungary (who had no business qualifying)?

2. Romania

The juries hosed Cezar. Why? He has an amazing voice, a great song, and the presentation was incredible. It’s almost like the jury punished him for being so far outside what they’re used to. He was punished by the professionals for being different while the televote embraced that difference.

3. Hungary

I’m sorry but ByeAlex was awful. It never should have made it out of the semi-final. I know Hungarians who were shocked it made it to the final. And then in the final 10th place. Clearly a lot of voters were very stoned when they voted.

4. Ireland

Last place? Are you kidding me? The most physical song up there enthusiastically done. Ryan Dolan did an awesome job singing and the presentation rocked. And last place???

5. Armenia

What were these guys doing in the final? They should have been last in their semi-final. Most of the acts in this year’s contest were world class. Armenia wasn’t.

I did not include above the ones that were badly hurt with an early draw order. That is bad luck, not a crime. It still sucks, but it’s a different issue.

So which result do you think was the screwiest?

Why do people think Israel should have qualified. She looked terrible and sounded like a Cat crying in absolute pain. Just horrid and deserved that placing.

Armenia had a good song in my eyes… with the other songs in their S final it’s not a surprise they were able to qualify with a good song. Also, it’s Armenia…. they have a very good qualification rate.

I agree with everything you’ve said except for Hungary . It was a gentle song and it sounded really good. But the woman singing backing vocals really annoys me as she doesn’t fit in with the performance and she’s almost trying to sing over byealex

1. Israel: Too ordinary amid a qualifying round full of spectacular stage and vocal performances. I can’t vote since I’m from New York City, but I watched that round and scored Moran 13th. 2. Romania: Cezar’s performance made excellent COMEDY. Unfortunately, I did not see the comedic value in his performance (as I did the Greeks’) when I watched this contest; otherwise, I might have scored him a bit higher than 16th in his pool and 23rd overall. 3. Hungary: My guess is, Alex’s recorded version benefited by the use of the same technique used by Kurt Cobain’s producers for… Read more »

1- San Marino not qualifying
2- Israel not qualifying
3- Finland not placing in the top 10
4- Romania finishing too high (didn’t think it should’ve qualified)
5- Azerbaijan finishing too high (top ten definitely, just not runner-up, probably 7-10)

No, no, no
Israel’s song was like a funeral dirge.
Kedvesem was nothing if not sweet.
Romania’s entry was just disturbing. I love the ‘different’. Cezar just didn’t pull it off.
The crimes this year were Sweden and Iceland doing so badly. But the best 3 songs all came in the top 3 so pretty pleased.

1. San Marino not making the final

3. Netherlands only finishing lower top 10.
4. Israel not making the final
5. Cezar making the final. Good performer, terrible song.

I so agree with you!!!!! 1: Moran Mazor had an amazing perfomance!!She have an wonderful voice 2: I hate the Armenian song! Sorry, but I still do not understand how they have more to finish in 18th place!! 3: Only Love Survives was one of my favorite!! I was shocked to see the latest! 4: Romania has a good perfomance but I think it would not end the 13th, there was a better song. 5: I think the same thing for Hungary, there was a better songs.

I’m gonna be bashed for what I’m about to say but not bigger crime to my eyes was seeing Greece going through to the final: it seems there is some ESC-Constitution/Bible that “forces” fans to always be seduced by all the crap Greece sends either more ethnic or … a joke about alcohol. This also applies to Azerbeijan … but let’s keep it this way so that no war arises around me. I agree that Mazor should have gone though the final: but God knows what made both juries and/or televoters hate it. I have 2 guesses: classical Eurovision fan-bashing… Read more »

I wanted Slovenia to qualify. Finland and Sweden should have been in top 10. My favorites were Ukraine, Norway and Azerbaijan. And they did very well 🙂

Yet another blunder: FYR Macedonia changing the catchy, regal-sounding Imperija for wacky, dissonant Pred da ze Razdeni.

Sure, doubt they would’ve made it to the finals with all the balkans’ on the otehr semi, but they would’e been more missed.

1- I absolutely loved Moran and ‘Rak bishvilo’, it was a beautiful song and I was POSITIVE it would make it to the final. I couldn’t believe it didn’t and I was actually very annoyed that songs like ‘Lonely Planet’, ‘Ég á líf’, and ‘It’s My Life’ made it to the final and not this one. 2- Oh dear god, Cezar, I’m sorry, but you were probably my absolutely least favourite of all of the 2013 contest, possibly every contest in the 2010s even. I was shocked to see that you made it to the final, and even more shocked… Read more »

other crimes in eurovision 2013

1)Germany-Should have won

Pretty much agree with everything.

Plus i would add Finland and France placing way, way too low in the final.

Oh, and Bombo not going to Eurovision was such a crime someone should literally go to jail for it.

I also count Bulgaria and Montenegro. If we had Baku’s point system, they would’ve surely went through. (How come Montenegro, who came 4th in televoting, ended 12th while Serbia, who wouldnt’ve gotten through by jury or televote, came 11th?)

There’s also Russia and Azerbaijan. No business in the top 5.

Finally someone right about Hungary. Maybe the wall was pretty, but the song was 3 minutes of nothing happening. Why do they feel the need to praise countries that aren’t as lucky Eurovision-wise when they are at their plain worst? (Estonia and Lithuania there too)

For starters, Cezar was not the first contertenor to grace the ESC stage, though he is by far the most successful (Azerbaijan’s 2008 effort notwithstanding) one. His voice aside, I thought it was a pretty generic dance entry. If it had come from, say, The Netherlands or Finland or Spain, I bet it would not have been nearly as popular. And the performance was a bit too much for my tastes. I agree with your thoughts on Israel and Armenia, but not for Hungary (for reasons mentioned in other comments) or Ireland. It was a strong year, Ireland should have… Read more »

If you ask me romania was bad and I never like his song. Israel is just so so. Ireland was bad having only high vibe typical dance song, lastly armenia is ok. I do not care about performance I only want good song. Armenia and hungary gave more catchy song compared to ireland, romania and israel. After all this is just opinion and you cannot just please everybody. The power is in the song itself, performance only add max 10% of its original value. For romania, it is unique, but no offence, I do not like it. Period.

I agree with Ireland and Romania! I love “Kedvesem”! It was great to hear a song in Hungarian, and it was very different to a lot of songs in the final this year. It was just one guy, one guitar, one backing singer and not really much else apart from ByeAlex’s quite good voice carrying the performance. I really enjoyed watching it in Malmo and I think it deserved a top 10 finish 🙂 I’m well aware that I’m in the minority right now, but I actually really liked Armenia this year! The lyrics are kinda strange, but at least… Read more »

Israel : The performance was good but the song was bland. Didn’t deserve to qualify. Romania : I totally agree you Hungary : I totally disagree with you, the song is very catchy was one of the best and the in eurovision this year. Ireland : the song was OK but the performance was a bit karaoke. Armenia : I disagree with you, the song and the performance weren’t great but good enough to qualify in final. For me : 1)- Bulgaria : the performance was one of the best in the two semi finals, very original, very professional, elitsa’s… Read more »

What, no San Marino on the list!? Tut Tut David!

As for Cezar, I knew Romania’s entry would flop on the jury voting section, way before the second semi-final has even started. The juries simply found the entry far too cheesy for their liking.

And my fears of the televoters finding Israel’s entry too dreary for their liking was eventually confirmed as Moran ended up 14th out of 17 on the televoting section.

I agree with everything, except for what you say about Hungary. It’s clearly a matter of taste. I was certainly not stoned when I voted for ByeAlex! And his song is my ringtone for when my “Kedvesem” calls me, so I still love it to bits.

If Russia sent ‘Only Love Survives’ – would’ve been Top 5.

I agree with Armenia and Hungary – although I liked the lyrics to each song, there was no “wow factor” about either, clearly San Marino and Israel deserved their spots.

In other words, I think Bulgaria deserved a place in the final – I had their song stuck on repeat for three days — repeat counter 382 (the instrumental version) — it is a rocking dance track.

Cezar was punished. Even today, a friend and I still support Cezar. Luckily, on his official Facebook, he posted ‘Eurovision 2014, anyone?’ 😀
