The noose that Vladimir Putin is tying around the necks of Russia’s LGBT population has had us feeling sick for weeks. Now we’re feeling even sicker. Russian news sources are reporting that Andrij Danylko, the drag queen known as Verka Serduchka, has lost a lucrative contract to appear on Russian variety “Saturday Night.” Producers are reportedly worried that Verka will be “advertising for non-traditional sexual relationships.” Color us disgusted.

Verka, who placed second at Eurovision in 2007 for Ukraine, is the latest Eurovision star to feel the chill of Putin’s hateful laws. Marcin Mrozinski recently pulled out of a concert in the country in protest of anti-gay legislation that has led to a rise in anti-gay violence. Besides denying Russia’s gay population the right to a normal life, the Russian regime is now denying Russia’s straight population the right to an entertaining Saturday evening. #yourlossputin.

The team from wiwibloggs.com stands in solidary with Verka and all of our gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, questioning and transgender brothers and sisters in Russia. Forget Putin. Let’s celebrate Verka’s second-place finish by reprising “Dancing Lasha Tumbai”!

There’s a really good book about Putin – http://www.amazon.com/The-Man-Without-Face-Unlikely/dp/1594486514

I can believe he’s willing to do anything. And doesn’t give a rip about the people of Russia.

The simple fact that Russia is still participating in ESC is probably the most hypocritical thing this country has been showcasing internationally. I mean, they know perfectly well the whole show is strongly supported by a huge LGBT following … yet they try (in a very similar way as Azerbaijan) to show themselves under a fake light of democracy, understanding and tolerance towards us all expecting to be “embrassed” by whole Europe as if all that was true. Bullshit. What they are trying to do it is gain international appeal of some sort … yet they insist on the playing… Read more »

I TRULLY hope the hosts next year (be Tim Schou, PLEASE!) make any kind of statement about it this year. Not a statement by itself, I mean something like the gay wedding @ the Interval Act. They gave their message clearly, the swedish.

How on earth is Russia going to broadcast Eurovision next year, then? At least by the new law Russia’s children won’t be able to watch it, since you can expect more of the same LGBT-affirming messages from Denmark’s hosts!

Nice to see that Dina Garipova stood by the message of her song for all of two minutes once the Contest was over…oh wait she hasn’t spoken out at all about the new laws in Russia.

There’s an old Chinese proverb: F*ck with a drag queen, end up with a stiletto in your throat. Watch out Putin!
