Conchita Wurst—the Austrian artist who is half woman, half sausage—has been selected by broadcaster ORF to represent Austria at Eurovision 2014. Austrian news site heute.at broke the news this morning, and we’re thoroughly relieved. The last good song we heard at the Austrian national selection was “That’s What I Am” by Miss Wurst herself!

Born Tom Neuwirth, Conchita competed at the 2012 Austrian national selection and finished second to the Trackshittaz. She actually won our fan poll that year, so I know y’all will embrace her selection in 2014! Conchita takes her character very seriously. Here’s how she described herself in an interview with wiwibloggs.com ahead of the Austrian national selection.

First, I wouldn’t call me a character, because I’m a real person. What you see is what you get 😉 Friends would say that I’m a very funny and loving woman. They are totally right! But let’s start at the beginning. I was born in the highlands of Colombia. My parents took me to Germany where I had a wonderful childhood in Berlin. Four years ago I met my handsome husband Jacque in Paris. Love at first sight. We decided to start our new life in Vienna and here we are…still totally in love.

But are you guys in love with the talented Miss Conchita Wurst? Let us know in the comments box below! Then read about the controversy facing our favourite Austrian drag artist.

be now. You’re so intelligent. You realize therefore considerably in terms of this matter, produced me personally consider it from so many numerous
angles. Its like men and women don’t seem to be involved unless it is something to accomplish with Lady gaga!
Your personal stuffs outstanding. All the time handle it up!

Kudos to Austria for this bold and brave choice! ESC has always been more than just a song contest. Political messages and statements for tolerance, love and peace amongst the people of Europe have always played a role in this contest in some way or the other. In times where barbaric laws are being enforced in Russia and people are persecuted and beaten up because of their sexuality, Conchita Wurst acts as a wonderful ambassador, fighting for a little more love around the world.

Neat choice, Austria. 😀 & Eurovision isn’t all “gay gay gay” lol.. Conchita will be just one of many entrants. It’s not like only gay entrants are chosen every year. Can’t judge fully till we hear the song 😀 Am looking forward to it!

He… She… um… at least had decent vocals back in 2012. We’ll have to see what Austria sends us. Many dubious artists actually sent great songs in the end.

This is what happens when decisions are taken very little ahead of Oktoberfest. They go for the Wurst.

I love how they picked Conchita, but I feel like this could turn into another joke entry from Austria, I’m hoping not though 😀

So this is how Eurovision 2014 begins … with a very “musical-oriented” choice … Well I only have one comment to state: Österreich? Desperate much?

Hahaha YESSSS. Her vocals have never been the strongest, but this is awesome news! With this, we have to bring back DQ for Denmark and Verka Serduchka for Ukraine. Everybody do drag! 🙂

As talented as she is, her looks, song (if its like 2012) and entire look in general just reinforce the Eurovision stereotype as a very camp show. I’m all for a quality song and performance, and best of luck to Conchita, but I’m just a bit mixed on this I guess. Some may say its ushering in a new era, others say its taking us back. We’ll see in May.

Why do people make such judgements on people looks … People who make judgement on race , gender and sexuality are nothing but uneducated dogs.. Conchita can sing and is a great performer that’s all that matters .. Now justs needs a great song .. Diva version 2.0 …

I can already imagine what the British media’s reaction to this would be: “Is Russell Brand competing at the Eurovision Song Contest? No, it’s Austrian transvestite Conchita Wurst!”.

I am usually calm when this Eurovision things happen. I tried to calm down everybody when the tagline was presented. “It’s just a simple phrase, don’t be such drama queens”. But now, I’m mad at Austria! Really? A drag queen? Why is Eurovision always so gay, gay, gay? Just because it has lots of gay fans, it doesn’t mean all the fans are gay. I hope the song is good.

Mad props to Austria! Conchita can sing! Now let’s hope they pick the right song, i.e. NOT ‘Shine 2.0’.

Conchita competed in the 2012 Austrian selection and came second to the Trackshittaz, not the 2011 one…
