As the summer draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on the songs that made it so joyous. ‘Sommer’ by Danish artist Niels Brinck blew joy through my loudspeakers. Although the song is entirely in Danish, even an English-speaker gets a feeling of lightweight nostalgia, sunshine, beaches and a festival spirit. This is the second single from his yet to be released sophomore album.

Brinck has not faded into obscurity since competing at Eurovision 2009. The 2013 edition of Dansk Melodi Grand Prix broke Denmark’s record for the highest number of entries. Brinck’s song “Human” was shortlisted down to the final 10. Although it didn’t win, it showcased his evolving style: He managed to imbue a three minute pop song with more weight and significance than most. The lyrics were meaningful, and quite proverbial in nature. His vocal delivery had depth and range. The staging was minimal, and the emphasis was all about the song and the creative processes that go with it. There are still plans to release “Human” to a wider European audience, and shooting the video will help with that.

In 2009, Brinck won the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix with a Ronan Keating penned song ‘Believe Again’, winning a ticket to represent Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow. He qualified for the final, and ended up in 13th place. Later that year, he released his self-titled debut album to commercial success, spinning two more Top 20 singles. Besides his own career, Brinck is credited with writing “The 1,” a chart-topping smash hit for pop singer Martin, a national sensation who won Danish X Factor. Last year, he lent his support to Anggun by dueting with her on a special version of Echo (You and I) released for the Danish market.

As we await the release of his album later in the year, it’s refreshing to know that Niels Brinck’s isn’t being rushed by his record label. He will take his time and hopefully release an album that speaks to his depth and talent.
