Poor Cliff Richard. Despite 2 attempts, the 60s superstar never won Eurovision. But at least he could always console himself with the fact that he had the biggest selling celebrity calendar of all time, that is until 5 pesky upstarts arrived on the scene…

Since its UK launch in 1998, Amazon has tracked the number of calendar sales on the site, and released an annual chart which Cliff Richard topped every year up to 2011. But then One Direction arrived. Ever since the best he has managed is second. However, while he may have lost out on the annual battles Cliff probably presumed that he was going to win the all time war.

Unfortunately for him, new figures show that in just 3 years Zayn, Louis, Harry, Liam and Niall have almost doubled Cliff’s lifetime record. I guess that’s definitive proof that the teeny bopper granddaughters are more powerful than their grannies.

I doubt Cliff will be offering his “Congratulations” to the boys anytime soon. In a 2012 interview he had this to say about the lads:

When people ask me about bands like One Direction, I say, I may not know them now, but if they are still here in five years, then ask me again

Burn! Although he did follow up by saying:

I must make the effort to YouTube One Direction.  I’m sure they’re good. You don’t get famous like that without having something to offer.

Maybe he’d be better off taking a leaf through their calendar and see where he’s going wrong. Then he might be able to reclaim his status as Britain’s favourite pinup.

Still, he can take comfort in the knowledge that his calendar sales are well ahead of other luminaries such as Olly Murs, Cheryl Cole, Kylie Minogue, Madonna and Justin Bieber. And if all else fails he can reminisce about his Eurovision days.
