Celine Dion, Queen of Eurovision 1988 and Canada’s biggest export after maple syrup, will drop her English-language album Loved Me Back to Life on November 1. In the build-up to that event she’s now teasing us with her second single “Somebody Loves Somebody.” But guess what: Celine is not the one doing the lovin’!
Celine, you’ll remember, was sweetness and light when she won Eurovision 1988. In “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi,” the singer begged her man to stay with her. “You who are looking for the star/ You who lives a dream/ You hero from space/ With a heart bigger than earth/ You give me a chance/ Take me far from here.” Well, now that Celine has had all that plastic surgery and sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, she does not need to beg anybody for anything.
In “Somebody Loves Somebody” she oozes attitude and self-confidence, and tells her other half that he needs to shut his mouth and that she’s pretty sure things are over between them: “I don’t believe in loving you no more, no, no/ That’s not the way it is somebody loves somebody.” It’s a good point, and a message we can all learn from. Pass the divorce papers, please.
The album includes songs written by Eg White, who previously worked with Adele on her albums 19 and 21.

Somebody Loves Somebody lyrics
I don’t want another piece of your mind
So take it somewhere else for the night
‘Cause I can’t take another goodbye
If you wanna bite, bite your tongue
Before you explode
But don’t let this get out of control
You don’t want me to leave you alone
When somebody loves somebody
That’s the way it’s supposed to be
‘Cause you knows nobody else would put up with your games, oh
I don’t believe in loving him no more, no, no
That’s not the way it is when somebody loves somebody
Eh, eh, eh, eh
When somebody loves somebody
Wait, I’m hearing every word that you say
You wonder if you made a mistake
It’s written all over your face
You know it’s too late
We’ve already fallen in love
Tell me, is it asking too much
For you to stick it out when it’s tough
Is it ever enough?
When somebody loves somebody
That’s the way it’s supposed to be
‘Cause she knows nobody else would put up with your games, oh
I don’t believe in loving him no more, no, no
That’s not the way it is somebody loves somebody
Eh, eh, eh, eh
When somebody loves somebody
Some people live their lives
Never believing in love
I don’t want that for us
When somebody loves somebody
That’s the way it’s supposed to be
‘Cause you know nobody else would put up with your games, oh
I don’t believe in loving you no more, no, no
That’s not the way it is somebody loves somebody
Eh, eh, eh, eh
When somebody loves somebody

I remember her interview in 1988-89 when she said they spoke
home Ukrainian, and before she went to school she didn’t
speak English….
I actually like this one a fair amount, probably the best I’ve heard from her in a long time. Her style of articulation sounds good over the rhythmic beat.
I preferred Loved Me Back to Life too. There’s something missing in this song, it’s all a bit nondescript.
A small correction: in “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi” Céline was not singing to any man at all as “partez” is the second person plural. She refers to all the great ones who have achieved major goals in their lifetime and served her as inspiration to follow. She wanted to join them in their glory and sucess … and in fact her whole career came true that way so the 1988 song is literally a prophetic metaphor of Céline Dion is today. About the new single: whereas I loved the Sia penned “Loved Me Back To Life”, the same I… Read more »
