If you spend too much time playing with your fiddle, then your woman will leave you. That’s the message that underpins Alexander Rybak’s latest single “5 to 7 Years.” In it, the Eurovision winner tells his woman that she’s the one, and that she shouldn’t worry he is going away for a bit—5 to 7 years to be exact. Apparently he has a lot to do, y’all!

There are a few ways to read this. First, he might actually love this woman but is just so career-obsessed that he feels like he needs to isolate himself for at least half a decade to achieve something professionally. Another reading is that he is a total commitment-phobe who promises her the world only because he wants to have a back-up in case he doesn’t find a proper woman when he’s out running around for five years. Either way it smacks of selfish.

Regardless of your reading the result is the same. He ends up all alone and playing with his fiddle: And now I’m back/ But you don’t even notice/ I told you I’ll be home tonight/ But all I see is empty rooms/ No pictures left of me and you/ A letter lying on the floor, “it’s over”/ You don’t love me anymore.”

You snooze you lose!

The song is pleasant enough, but I’ll be illegally downloading it rather than purchasing it. The best bit is the anthemic chorus, which reminds us of FUN’s “We Are Young”. There’s nothing wrong with riding a trend, y’all.

Writing on his Youtube page, Rybak said the song was “a gift for the best fans in the world; You!”

5 to 7 Years Lyrics

Let me kiss your tears away
There’s no need to feel afraid
I told you, darling, you’re the one
So, don’t worry, when tomorrow I’ll be gone

I will return,
with gold and treasures for you,
from all the world

And you may roll your eyes at me
Tell me once more how I used to be
But you hurt my feelings
‘Cause everything I do
You know, I do it just for you

And I believe with you in my heart
There’s nothing I can’t achieve

And so, I hope our love will last forever
Just give me 5 to 7 years and I’ll be yours
Because I know that we belong together
I just need 5 to 7 years and I’ll be yours

So, please, you must have faith in me
There’s no place, I’d rather be than home with you
Where all is safe and warm
But now I need to fight this storm

And I will win
My life together with you,
will soon begin

And so, I hope our love will last forever
Just give me 5 to 7 years and I’ll be yours
Because I know that we belong together
I just need 5 to 7 years and I’ll be yours

But lately you’ve been silent
Please answer when I call you
You’re so cold to me
And now I’m back
But you don’t even notice
I told you I’ll be home tonight
But all I see is empty rooms
No pictures left of me and you
A letter lying on the floor, “it’s over”
You don’t love me anymore

But still, I hope our love will last forever
Just give me 5 to 7 years and I’ll be yours
Because I know that we belong together
I just need 5 to 7 years and I’ll be yours

Yes, I’ll be yours
And our love will last forever
Just give me 5 to 7 years and I’ll be yours
Oh, because I know that we belong together
I just need 5 to 7 years..
Only 5 to 7 years..
Please, give me 5 to 7 years..
And I’ll be yours.

It’s a bit of a daft song, and if it were anybody else singing it, I doubt I would have made it through almost 4 minutes there. I think the fans will love it, me included!
