We’re still recovering from our nausea after listening to a Belarusian conservative hate on Conchita Wurst. If you have not yet watched the video of him saying that Miss Wurst makes him “ill”, then click here.
Assuming you have not thrown up, it is time to hear Conchita’s response. Proving that it is possible to take the high road, she delivers a message of tolerance Miss Universe style. The only difference is that this beauty queen, who happens to have a beard, is sincere. And boy has she been around the block.
As a child Conchita, who grew up as Tom Neuwrith, faced plenty of prejudice for failing to conform to gender stereotypes. “My stance is that I fight for something positive rather than against something negative,” she told Radio Free Europe. “I was always an outsider and I was confronted with discrimination. I don’t want this to happen to the next generation.”
The uproar in Belarus and the Anti-Wurst Campaign in Austria did not surprise her. “I think there are intolerant people everywhere. One cannot reduce it to Belarus and Russia. I think there were enoguh people against [my selection] here in Austria, as we have seen. In the end it’s just something I expected.”
