You can find a little bit of Eurovision everywhere, y’all. We saw this again on January 2nd when the Olympic torch arrived in Izhevsk – the capital city of Russian federal region of Udmurtia.

Residents of Izhevsk gathered to sing traditional songs in the Udmurt dialect. The highlight of the event was when the Buranovskiye Babushke, our favorite grannies ever to come out of Russia, performed their Eurovision song ‘Party for everybody’. Now that’s what we call a party!

One  of them–75 year old Galina Koneva–also served as one of the 154 torch bearers who ferried the olympic torch along the 30km route across the city. Question: how can one person carry a torch and a walking stick at the same time?

Poor granny had to carry out a two-month diet and exercise plan to join the crew. Apparently bread baking isn’t sufficient exercise…

A relay race began at the train station and then turned into a sort of panoramic tour of the city, passing the most significant sites such as the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the National Museum and the town square, where there was a performance by ice sculptors.

Wanna melt the ice? Then take a look at the Buranovskiye Babushki’s performance at Eurovision 2012, where they finished up as the runner-ups:
