I’m not going to pretend that we’ve been following Lithuania’s national selection. Eurovizijos 2014 is a marathon contest that’s been going on for months and seems to involve half of Lithuania’s three million people, and about three-fourths of its songwriters. During tonight’s show the eight remaining contestants performed 16 songs, and two songs and one act were eliminated. If you want to exact details on the rules, you can click here. You might need a notepad and some ibuprofen.

When #umk14 finished this evening I saw some of y’all hating on the Lithuanian contest on Twitter so I decided I’d tune in. I was immediately transported to a karaoke bar in 1985, and saw a woman flashing her pink bra straps while singing a number called “Attention.” Whoever wrote this will not be winning a Grammy any time soon.

The lyrics are hilarious, but I don’t think they’re meant to be.

You can buy me for a drink or two, but I’m not that easy.
You saw me chatting with my girls at the bar, we’re all pretty.
You told me I look like a movie star, I’m not that easy.
I’m going to make you fall, down-down-down-down on your knees….

Well, as it turns out, Vilija Mataciunaite—she with the pink bra straps—actually won tonight’s heat. One of the jurors even compared her to Tina Turner. Really?!

She will live to screach for another week along with Mia, Ieva Zasimauskaite, Vaidas Baumila, Monika Linkyte, VIG Roses, and Martynas Kavaliauskas.

The result of the two-hour show was that Justinas Lapatinskas was sent home. Not even a tangerine coloured suit could save him.

Have you been following the Lithuanian contest? What song and artist are you hoping will go all the way?

lol at the winner ohh there were so many more better performances that night. Ah well. & the fact that Attention is one of the songs competing to actually represent is worrying, hahaha. I laughed about seeing 2 red suits in one night, but I have to say Lauri wore his best 😉

The problem with all these singing soap operas is that in the real contest it won’t be a second chance, a second show to prove yourself. It’s give it all or leave. There are plenty talent shows like X Factor, The Voice to train. Eurovision is more like a final star show. Bang bang bang, it’s over, the winner is… And a national selection not testing singers to such conditions is plain waste of time.

I think the Lithuan competion is a joke! The songs is really really bad and wonder if broadcaster and jury have any music taste. It’s a shame!

I followed it till I fell asleep. I think it was after 10 minutes in.

I can see why Vilija won. Her ability to nail the fast English is notable, and she has quite the range. Listen to the low notes she was able to hit. Comparisons to Tina Turner are a stretch.

Monika Linkyte is the best singer by far (her “Gravity” cover in Show Three was very good) and the best songs are “Breakaway” and “Blowing Out Cobwebs.” Those songs will even have trouble making the final but every other one will no doubt not qualify.
