On Saturday the first semi-final of Dziesma 2014, the Latvian selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, finally kicks off. All singers are busy perfecting their performances and squeezing into their tightest pants. But Patrick Melbler, our Austrian correspondent, still managed to interview a few of the artists. Today he spoke with Samanta Tina, last year’s runner-up.
First of all, a big thank you for taking the time to speak with us. Many people consider you a favourite to win. What do you think about that?
Hi, nice to hear from you! It’s a big honor to know that! It is a great feeling when lots of people are talking about me, that’s giving me more power and belief for the whole show.
Your song is called “Stay”. What’s it about?
My song is about love, but you never gonna love really, if your soul and mind don’t think in one direction. Be in harmony with yourself. I think that’s the best description of my song and what I feel.
What did it feel like when you placed 2nd last year behind “Grupa PER”?
Of course I was a bit upset, but I was happy about “PER”! I wasn’t angry or full with negative emotions, cause I was really pleased for all the support from my fans. I got more happier!
Why did you decide to enter the contest for a third time?
I really liked it the last two years! I couldn’t find any other answer. “Why not?”
Have you heard the other songs competing in Latvia this year? Which songs do you like?
Yes, of course, I have heard some of the songs. Many of them are really good and a big competitive for me, but there are songs which I don’t get the meaning of them. I wish everyone good luck!
On Saturday you will compete in the first semi final. Are you nervous?
Yes, I’m really nervous since I knew that we got two semifinals. But it’s normal, cause it shows that I care what I’m doing! I’m happy to be there.
Are you a Eurovision fan? What is your favourite Latvian entry in the history of Eurovision?
As a musician, I‘m a huge fan! I watch it every year! My favourite Latvian entry is no one else as Marie N with her song “I Wanna“. It was such a fantastic song.
