TVP, Poland’s state broadcaster, has confirmed that Donatan and Cleo will sing for the nation at Eurovision 2014!

Apparently the excitement was too much for the broadcaster to bear. Earlier this morning they announced that they would make the announcement this evening at 18:30 CET. But as all y’all clicked on their web site and chanted “My Slowianie” they decided to make the announcement official. Here’s what they said.

Television Poland has made this choice based on the verdict of a specially appointed committee that included renowned journalists and musical experts. Important advisers included fans of the competition in Poland, abundant correspondence received by the TVP and people who sent in their analysis and proposals, as well as the Association of OGAE Poland (“Organisation Générale des Amateurs de l’Eurovision, bringing together a group of fans of the Eurovision Song Contest, which operates in 37 countries). According to most experts and fans, the Polish representative should present a song that is modern and fresh, and which refers to the nation and its musical roots.

The broadcaster says it must trim 10 seconds off of the song before Eurovision, and that it may rework the lyrics to create an English-Polish hybrid. This follows the release of “My Slowianie” in Polish earlier in the year, and the release of  the English-language version “Slavic Girls” / “We the Slavs” a few weeks ago.

The broadcaster is clearly aware that some people will roll their eyes and say WTF? The English language version of the song features lyrics like, “Cream and butter taste so good…our beauty is famous all over the world, you gotta see it for yourself…”

So, in today’s announcement, they quote cultural critic Dr. Krzysztof Moraczewski, who defended the song in these terms: “It is a really smart parody. And if anyone takes it seriously, it’s even better, funnier.”

What do you think? Is this going to go down like Montenegro 2013?

Here’s the Polish version:

And here’s the English version (it’s dubbed over the video above):

TVP will still host a live show this evening at 18:30 CET. We can’t wait to hear what Donatan and Cleo have to say!

Now I usually hate songs like this but… I love it the video is trashy but its a catchy song and people are going to find themselves humming/singing it when they’re making a cup of tea. This should do very well in the televote but the juries might give it a low score. But if the juries are younger people then I think this could work (not a winner) But I love how they didn’t have any intention to enter Eurovision but because fans wanted it TVP tried hard to get them. Take note BBC at least try. And Poland… Read more »

Cancion diferente, pero sobrevalorada segun los comentarios que veo escrito aqui.Video de contenido sexual y para nada me parece moderno la imagen que dan de las mujeres.Positivo el regreso de Polonia.

Montenegro 2013 was much better and modern, although their uniforms ruined their chances.

If Poland goes for a kitsch/parody entry, they won’t make it but in general they will receive big support from the public. I hope the stage performance will be nothing like the trashy and ridiculous video clip

Poland, well done. This song is far fresher than anything else presented to this very moment. Spain has that old boring Disney song, Albania has something that someone calls it a song, Iceland has the trash, Latvia not so far from that, Ukraine has the generic ESC song, Hungary brings the update, Lithuania as well. Malta has the USA (in a Texas sense), Belarus has the cheap Robin Thicke (but somehow unforgettable song), Finland has the British band music update, Macedonia has the pop tune (instantly forgettable), Switzerland has something boring, Italy has something on italian for instance…and there’s Poland.… Read more »

Quoting the song,
” And our ladies don’t have complexes ,
Because they have no reason to have them .
And in the video there is no subtext ,
If you don’t believe this, come to the country ! “

They’ll have to make it feel fresh again by May.

It has less in common with “Ingranka” than with Toni Basil’s “Mickey” (1982)
“Oh Mickey, you’re so fine — You’re so fine you blow my mind. Hey Mickey! Hey Mickey!” Or even “Macarena.”

A few dance moves and easy chants could go a long way if they don’t wear out their welcome first.

Hahaha, everyone is calling “My S?owianie” horrible, yet they’re supporting awful songs like “Undo” and “Dancing in the Rain”. Congratulations to Donatan & Cleo for being fresh in ESC.

Hey Poland, do you know already, in which arena you will host next Eurovision? Nobody can defeat this, there is no bigger hit at this time in Europe! Many congrats!

Just because it sounds urban doesn’t mean that you can compare this to “Igranka”. Igranka was a reggaeton-dubstep hip hop number while this is more like ethno-hip hop beat going on in it. And the other difference point is, the girl doesn’t rapping. I don’t know whether it’s rap or not, but it doesn’t matter It’s not a great delicious gorgeous song, we admit it. But one thing for sure, Poland managed to get one of their famous hip hop producer for Eurovision with 38 million hits on youtube and the song was also being in the chart last year.… Read more »

@KBGNL
It doesn’t make sense, what you are saying.
Anyways, I respect it, it is your point of view (wierd though).

And please don’t say that all dutch people hate Poland, since I have plenty of dutch friends so I just can’t agree with you.

Cheers

@Gregory and Pole
Obviously you didn’t read my words carefully enough. Diversity: cool; Poland: even cooler; Polish “song”: will be a ‘not so much’ in the eyes of a great deal of the Dutch (and maybe even Western Europe) public – a lot of people won’t like it, I suspect (thought this was diversity too). And keep in mind the fact that one delirious, idiot Dutch politician scores massive political points with hate against Poland, and a great part of the Dutch public agree with him … 🙁

thought that eurovision’s main idea is diversity. really don’t get your attitude that you make such a big deal saying about haterd? how can you say that you hate somebody only because you do not like the song?

This “song” (if we can call it that way) resembles “Igranka” and that is exactly why it doesn’t fit in at Eurovision. It is too committed to one particular niche of “music”. Not Western Europe’s cup of tea, I think: it exemplifies all the reasons why the Dutch hate Poland…

I like it! It doesn’t have the weird edge of “Igranka” that (probably) scared off some viewers. It’s fun and goofy and it will probably come with a highly entertaining performance. I especially like the mix of more traditional music styles with modern stuff. Welcome back, Poland!

I’m very happy about this. It reminds me of a better version of “Igranka”, but if Cleo manages to sing great live it has a very good chance of qualifying since Montenegro reached 4th in the televote.

Well, this one is a love or hate. I think I’m leaning towards the second one. It resembles to ”Igranka” but for me it’s nowhere near that good. Igranka was great for me! This one’s seriously monotonous and doesn’t have a proper rhyming at least at the english version (slavic girls, we know how to show our inner beauty, ”show what your mamma gave ya” doesn’t really fit there). Well, I hope they revamp it somewhat. Good luck Poland!

I fear it will flop like Montenegro 2013 with Igranka :S
Popular with televote but tanked by the juries and failing to qualify :'(

Hopefully they replace the less stellar lines in English with Polish. I doubt the Polish lyrics are brilliant, but they’ll give them the flavor needed. And English will make the people understand a bit of the atmosphere. Overall, smart going bilingual, but make sure you know how to divide it.

At least it’s sure the staging will be traditional and likewise to the video. A step in the right direction
