Axel Hirsoux has won Belgium Eurosong 2014 with his song “Mother” and will represent Belgium in Copenhagen. It was a decisive victory. He won the televote and received the highest points from the international juries (Azerbaijan, Denmark, Ireland, FYR Macedonia, Netherlands, Spain and Belarus). As he stated during the show, “Mother” pays hommage to all the mothers, grandmothers and women in the world. It’s a touching tribute from a talented singer. He’s clearly singing from the heart.

It was an intriguing evening. Eva and Ruslana had a little song competition of their own, the experts all stated they want Axel Hirsoux to advance to the final, Udo actually listened to what the experts told him last time, Sil didnt cry and Bandits fans shrieked and screamed until our ears rang. Not cute. But in the end, Axel won the day. With more than 50 percent of the televote, he is a deserving winner.

You can see the complete jury and televoting results below. What do you think of the song? Is Belgium headed to the final?

Song is lovely, but a male singing with female voice makes it less lovely…

Well i am from Belgium and maybe we will the old days back. We were there from the beginning and in those old days it was a music festival. Who could really sing. Not circus acts. If we aren’t in final or not, we can still be proud that we sended someone with a big voice, and has talent.

The song is written by Rafael Artesero? Is that the same guy who also made the song for Lucia Perez in 2011??

That is pretty fantastic actually …
Just get rid of the dancer. That bit is really naff.

There are about five “classy ballads” in semifinal 1 and not enough support for all of them, but I think “Mother” will reach the final.

Thank goodness it’s not in the same semi as Norway for two reasons. 1) Both can qualify. 2) Imagine if one follows the other in the order and everyone goes to sleep! So hopefully that will not happen in the final haha

@Eugene UK

Speaking of Molly’s song – even though it’s a decent attempt, I don’t dig it. Maybe I’m tired from all these ballads and peace songs. I ended up having Denmark, Portugal, Israel, Estonia, Macedonia & Greece on my “happy list”. 🙂 And I might vote for them all, just because IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE A PARTY, people, not a Sleeping Beauty’s playlist.

Sil was my favorite, so sad that she didn’t win.

I like this one. Wonderful voice, sweet song.

Unfortunately, it does call to mind that the past few years have had better ballads than the ones we’re seeing now. “Nar jag blundar,” another song about the singer’s mother, was far more interesting than this.

There sure are alot of ballads in the contest I wonder will this allow a strong song which is different to win?

This may go off topic, as well, but the supposed “fear” of the Ukrainians is non-existent, actually. And it’s quite complex situation, to be honest. Nonetheless, I don’t see any “black and sad” news coming from Ukraine, people are behaving OK and even partying in Crimea because of their referendum. Oh, the media, I hate them so much, from whatever state they come from and whatever point of view they are presenting. But, images aren’t showing the “drama” that Ruslana shared thus involving ESC clearly into politics (not that it wasn’t involved already).

It’s a good one. I really think that he is the voice of this year’s contest. I like it’s message. It could be a bit less repetitive, but I don’t mind it!
It really is a ballad year! At least hald of the countries have ballads (not considering songs like Germany as a ballad)

NOOOOOOO!!!
Over dramatic, fake and ear piercingly high-pitched.

Congratulations Iceland, you don’t have the worst song in the competition anymore.

I don’t get it, I never did, I never will … I can’t stand theatrics over-the-top fake vocal performances and all that gestures are beyond annoying.

There are far better songs about mothers in the world than … this load of crap!

But yes is a good choice, top 10 sure. He is singing for all women and he looks like a nice boy. Maybe top5.

Uh I strongly dislike this song. My least favourite in the final and this is going into my Bottom Three for 2014.

There’s no doubt Axel has a good operaic soprano voice, but the structure of the song reminds me a lot of ‘Je Suis Malade’ so I can’t help comparing between the two. I think it’s too over the top as an ode to a mother.

I knew Axel would win it! I had a feeling ever since he covered Anne-Marie David that he would win the right to fly the Belgian flag in Denmark. But as for it’s chances now, I have my doubts. Although it was clearly the best song in Eurosong, I don’t know if it will qualify in its semi. Albania sentenced itself to death today, and Iceland and Latvia are not making it by a long shot. We know that Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, Sweden, and Hungary will make the final for sure. That leaves five more spots open. I predict that… Read more »

Yet again, it’s another ok song, although I’m not a big fan. Belgium luckily has The Netherlands to give them 12 points in order to push them closer to qualification. I don’t know if this will qualify or not, this could go well or very badly.

such a sweet song. Far better than norway
