Suzy—born Susana Guerra—has won Portugal’s Festival Da Canção with her song “Quero Ser Tua” (Wanna Be Yours). The song is three minutes of upbeat cha-cha, and the stage show includes women in really short skirts and men beating really big drums. It’s a party in Portugal, y’all. Suzy had her biggest success in the 1990’s. Hopefully representing Portugal can bring her a bit of glory and fame in Europe.

Ahead of the show Catarina Pereira won our poll with her song “Mea Culpa”. But during the actual show she sounded a bit messy at times. This was mainly due to the backing singers. Rui Andrade didn’t sound too great tonight either. Zana has an amazing voice, but she should have chosen some taller backsingers, as she looked like a giant. Raquel’s song was forgettable.

Side-note: the first interval act was really breathtaking. The broadcaster created a compilation of all the Portuguese writers, singers, and composers that have ever been involved in Portugal’s Eurovision acts, including those that have passed away.The guiding music was Siléncio E Tanta Gente’. It was intimate and lovely.

What do you think? Did the Portugese audience made the right call? Will Portugal make it to the final after an year of absence?

This song is AWESOME!!! Everyone in America loves this song!

You negative Portuguese are so silly!
If some of you understood all the words to most of the top songs in English you would understand that most popular songs have lyrics sound stupid if you actually think about what is being said.

Whats interesting is that everyone else in the world loves this song!
Haters are always going to hate!

Probably because I am Latin (from Italy) but, I like this song very much and Portuguese is perfect for this sound.

A crap song, this song deserved nul points…..the worst Portuguese entry ever… is worse than “Oração” (1964), a awful way to celebrate 50 years of Portuguese participations in ESC.

The song is ghastly and indeed deserves the last place ranking it currently has in the betting odds. The performance will anyway be completely submerged in the semi-final. A terrible return for Portugal in the contest, and a complete waste of time and money on the part of RTP.

I personally think this song will qualify to the final. It’s fun, happy, and a overall good summer tune. Most of Europe won’t understand the lyrics, but they’ll be moving their bodies to the rhythm 🙂

The Spanish entry only repites: the rain the rain… Spain this year is a 1998 song, brilliant singer but HORRIBLE song. Portugal have a good singer and a beautiful and enjoyable entry. My top: 1. Armenia 2. Hungary 3. Denmark 4. Israel 5. United Kingdom 6. Italy 7. Ireland 8. Poland 9. Germany 10. Portugal 11. FYR Macedonia 12. Switcerland 13. The Netherlands 14. Norway 15. Estonia 16. Not sure where all the hate for this entry is coming from… this is actually really enjoyable. It may be dated, but it still has more life than half the entries in the competition this year. She sings really quite well, too. I’d be surprised if Portugal missed the final this year, unless her vocals are really bad. She’ll stick out, too, being one of TWO songs (three if you count the single phrase in Latvian from “Cake to Bake”) containing lyrics that aren’t in English in her semifinal. This will probably appease the jury. Just let Ryan Dolan have… Read more »

@Easpag and @Mitchel:

Sorry I still do not know about music Pimba and Lambada. Previously I only know the Latino rhythms consist of Salsa, Samba, Chacha, Morena, Kuduro, and the Caribbean. Maybe other parts of Latin rhythm not I know, thanks for the reply and I love this song. Portugal I insert in the third position, while Spain and San Marino are in the second position and the first for the best.

@Charles, no pun intended, but after your long comment about music tastes and “general stupidity of the people voting for kitschy songs”, I visualise you as a middle-aged men sitting in a large library with a cat on your couch, listening to some classical music from a vinyl player, moaning and hating everybody else just because, entitling yourself as elitist. 🙂

I am just joking, I don’t wanna start a fight with you. 🙂

Let the people enjoy. I see ESC as an escape from everyday’s drama happening in real life. Cheers.

@Joanna

Because ESC fans are all “drama” when their favorite does not win in a whatever NF. 🙂 And keep on bashing the song that is chosen, even though they’ll dance on this one in May. Ah, Europe. 🙂

I don’t understand why people dislike this entry. I really like the song and I like Suzy’s voice. It’s catchy and makes me want to dance. And Suzy can sing really well by herself. She doesn’t need to rely on backup singers like Catarina does. Other than the fact that the song can get a little repetitive, it’s a good song.

Disaster … Disaster … Disaster …. Disaster …. I’ve asked this before and I’ll ask again: why coming back to Eurovision when there is not real music commitment whatsoever and not much money to spend to make some impact? All 10 songs were bad or average … none had the one wow-factor, none! Everything you have left is celebrating the past with Ary dos Santos, the deceased Portuguese poet who wrote so many of the 70s entries for Portugal and then using what I still considered the most beautiful Portuguese song ever to grace Eurovision “Silêncio E Tanta Gente”. If… Read more »

Samba? Do you know your Latin music genres?

Anyways, I don’t think this is too bad. It’s definitely not a good song, but it’s catchy, and the vocals are ok. It’s a borderline qualifier for me.

Hah, in a previous conversation here, on this site, I said that this song was the only one that made me smile in a positive way (while being part of below mediocre show/songs). Somehow, I’m glad that Portugal sent this, even though it’s definitely too many years late and I definitely wont put the song among my Top10, nor 15. 🙂

Good luck Portugal, at least you’ll not spend money on extra nights in CPH.

Portugal for send this you were better out of Eurovision. Her song is SHAME, she only repeats “I wanna be yours 😉 …”

Pathetic.

I feel bad because you are always out of the final, but this year you really deserve it.

I’m not very thrilled with the song, it could have been representing Portugal in 1987. But apart of that, I think it’s very cool to send a song that showcasing the original music which comes from that country..

Well, it’s not good, but it cam be really improved. Complete diferent routine on stage, with more interaction between dancers (should invest in something close to kuduro or lambada), taking out those 3 male dancers … If they do that we will have a surprise and can go to the final

Uh, not too happy about this and I’m pretty surprised as well. This song’s pretty annoying and “Mea culpa” grew on me so much to the point where I would’ve been rooting for it. I’m sorry but Suzy’s not making it through to the final.

It is so good news for San Marino. Portugal and Moldova choose bad songs.
We have 7 countries for we can bet to be in final 1. Azerbaijan 2.Ukraine 3.Armenia 4.Estonia 5.Russia (will lost many points because Ukraine crisis) 6.Sweden 7.Hungary . For 3 place with go to final , i think will figh 4 countries 1. San Marino 2.Montenegro 3.Moldova 4.Albania and maybe The Netherlands. Portugal, Latvia, Iceland, Belgium has not good chance for final this year.

Wow, this is pretty bad. Apart from Spain throwing a 12 at Portugal in the semi, I can’t see this getting many points. That’s why I think this an entry that’s guaranteed not to qualify, which makes semi-final 1 interesting. Latvia, Iceland and Portugal being very likely to get the boot, The Netherlands and Albania’s entries not being particularly liked, Russia who is not the most popular country atm and two countries that have never successfully qualified. Roll on May 6th.

Zana is not tall woman, she stands on some pedestal and long dress covers that. For me Zana would be best choice for Portugal this year. Suzy win with not good song, autor Emanuel wrote Portugal entry from 2007 , when Portugal finsihed on 11 place in semi final with record 28 countries that year , we don t have 28 songs in final at Eurovision. I m only happy that Catarina didn t win with copy of her song from 2010 when she was on second place. She is second time on second place in final , and Rui… Read more »
