Just like buses, you wait ages for an official Eurovision video and then they all seem to come at once. The Swiss entry can now be added to the collection. The “Hunter of Stars” clip contains some dodgy armography and random spaghetti flinging, however, the real question is what the heck is Sebalter singing about?

If I’m being honest I was kinda distracted by all the whistling, when the song was first released. But now that Ukraine’s Maria has gone and made him look like an amateur tweet-tweeter, the sheen has worn off and I’ve been forced to examine the lyrics in further details. And I’m confused!

He’s wet and he’s dirty. He roars like a lion. Evil satellites. Candidates. Aye, aye, aye, how did I not notice this gibberish sooner? The best theory I can come up with, is that Sebalter is singing about the concept of male bravado – he portrays himself as a courageous “lion” wooing his “prey”, whereas in reality he is wracked with self doubt  and confidence issues – “I’m so wet, I’m dirty”. Except he sounds and looks far too chirpy to be a man struggling with inner turmoil. His terrible diction doesn’t help matters either.

What do y’all think?

“Hunter of Stars” by Sebalter Lyrics

Whistles

Looking for a candidate you have an option only one choice
Sipping my drinks looking around, there is so much beauty, yes we can
But yet, self-confidence is a fragile concept, that often fades away in the night
And there it comes, that unwanted guest, there is no place for you tonight

Want me to go, want me to go
Cause ya think I’m lying cause ya think I’m lying
No, open the door
Cause tonight I cannot go hunting for stars, no no

Whistles

Like an evil satellite, twisting the truth then leaving us alone
In this mad and moody world, society without love
And I state my heart has been well trained, I’m gonna be your candidate
I am the hunter you are the prey, tonight I’m gonna eat you up

Want me to go, want me to go
Cause ya think I’m lying cause ya think I’m lying
No, open the door
Cause tonight I cannot go hunting for stars

I press my nose to the glass, it’s raining outside, it’s raining outside
I would like to storm in, roar like a lion, roar like a lion
I fear your judgement, I fear your judgement, I’m so wet, I’m dirty
I fear your judgement, I fear your judgement,
That it’s me and my imperfection

Violin solo

Want me to go, want me to go
Cause ya think I’m lying cause ya think I’m lying
No, open the door
Cause tonight I cannot go hunting for stars, no no

Want me to go
Cause ya think I’m lying cause ya think I’m lying
No, open the door
Cause tonight I cannot go hunting for stars, no no

Want me to go
Cause ya think I’m lying cause ya think I’m lying
No, open the door
Cause tonight I cannot go hunting for stars, no no

I get the problem with the lyrics people are complaining about. But hell I can relate to the song. It almost perfectly fits one of my relationships. Thinking i was well prepared for everything. Come at me life! It was ok at first and then worse and worse, as if something systematically made it harder and harder to pull through. It’s not so much about the story board but about the feeling of it. Its point is to make little sense when you try to make it into pictures. Its not about the nose to the glass or roaring like… Read more »

Personally, I think it is the best song in this year competition song contest. Now about the lyrics….To me they are clear… It is about a boy in a bar who is interested for a girl (candidate). They both drink (sipping the drinks). At the beginning he has self confidence (only one choice) but the girl does not like him, she thinks he lies and and she wants him to go (refrain). He insists (like an evil satellite) (unwanted guest), he wants to conquer her (you are my pray, roar like a lion), but at the end he looses confidence… Read more »

Lol the lyrics are so strange and that’s what makes it stand out most for me. When the spaghetti lands on the guy’s face is the best part!!!!!!!!!!

I know he CAN perform it live, I’m just not sure he should. To me he appears too rushed getting the lines out to make them expressive or to engage with the camera.

Never mind about this being the most unique song. I totally forgot about Georgia’s.

@Zolan: Yes, whistling must be performed live. But he (impressively) performed it live at Switzerland’s final. Padraig’s interpretation is probably correct. In any case, this is the most unique song in the contest this year. And seeing these guys jam before the Swiss final makes me really wonder why nobody except Quartissimo in 2009 has recently complained that Eurovision doesn’t even allow live instruments. As long as Sebalter pulls it off live (i.e. as long as he sings on beat), this should go to the final without a problem, despite it being Switzerland. Then again, the jury could screw them… Read more »

Lyrics look like a chunk of concept-board translated verbatim instead of crafted into effective verse. Padraig’s interpretation is plausible, but the writing is too shabby to be sure. An interpretation that makes it look more poetic or clever eludes me. It’s aiming for the feelgood factor of “Tomorrow” (Malta 2013) and missing. I think that’s mainly due to the frantic pace of syllable shovelling and whistling required. Whistling is a “vocal” effect. Does it have to performed live on stage? Does it depend on whether the frontperson acts it to camera? (And if not, what about beatboxing?) It’s a nice… Read more »
