Most years, it’s easy to pick a winner for ESC, months in advance, even before the National Finalis complete (hello Loreen). However, this year it’s much more difficult—and much more exciting. Last year there were 3 favourites, Denmark, Norway and Ukraine, which all finished in the top 4. This year Aram MP3 is predicted to win, but the race is tighter than Maria Yaremchuk’s stomach. Bookies aside, YouTube offers an interesting glimpse into what Eurovision voters are watching. It shows who is generating buzz and who may be able to ride a wave of momentum and popular support to victory. Yes, this approach is limited for several reasons, which we outline here. But it’s still an interesting barometer (among many others). So yes: you need to take this with a grain of salt!
Here are the YouTube statistics as of 1PM GMT on Monday, 14th of April, 2014. This list of rankings only includes views from the official eurovision.tv YouTube channel. Views form the host broadcasters’ channels, the artists’ private channels and other channels may mean something, but we simply cannot aggregate all of them.

The top three from two weeks ago remain at the top. However, Ruth Lorenzo and Emma passed Molly, who is now down in sixth. Macedonia dropped down 5 places into 16th! France have dropped 4 spots. The Netherlands have shot up 4 places, so they’re not staying calm after the storm, y’all. Denmark have moved up 10 places. That’s a big jump. Sadly Basim is still only in 26th…
Just a note that different videos were uploaded at different times which give advantages and disadvantages. Slovenia changed their official video, so that’s why it has less views than on the first statistic on March 30th.

Youtube or my neighbour’s dog can predict all they want … But taking this seriously to the point of believing that he actually can win is just absurd. This has been and remains desperate …and a great song always speaks for itself … not this way I’m afraid. Armenia needs to calm down and stop wanting to be the centre of attention in such a desperate way. Youtube viewing fugures doesn’t determine eurovision song contest, performance, results, if we look at these youtubes, OGAE’s, Bookies they are not exatly same with their list, so if we follow them and predict how countries will score we can only confuse ourselves. This YouTube ranking is not reliable, at least concerning Basim from Denmark. The official Melodi Grand Prix video with Basim and Cliche Love Song, with the perfomance at the Danish national show, has had more than 1.5 million views! And I agree, that would be a more accurate way to know, but we would also need to take into account how many people actually like or dislike the video, against how many people just view it, so is still tricky to determine if people is watching a given video because they actually like the song or for any other reason, because most people only watch it without leaving any indication of why they did. Youtube views count for nothing….Denmark was nowhere near the top at this stage past year and won easily. Youtube views don’t say much but obviously the likes and dislikes say it. 90% likes? Then definitely people love the song. In Conchita’s case it’s different. Over 60% dislikes. Do the math. For the bookies: I don’t think Aram is losing their interest at all and the more he performs during the tour the more people are going to love him. Just watch his live performance in London. Not only is he a great singer, but a genius singer too. You’ll see how he changes the beginning boring parts by adding a lot of character.
