Since the video of “Miracle” was released yesterday, Spanish fans accused the Romanian duo Paula Seling and Ovi of copying Ruth Lorenzo’s “Dancing In the Rain” video. Today, Paula addressed the allegations and called them “absurd”.

In an open interview with the fans for Romanian daily “Adevarul”, Wiwibloggs asked Paula to respond to the accusations of plagiarism. Here is her response, at the 25:10 mark:

I doubt that Alex [Ceausu, the video director] sat and watched all the other ESC videos. Sometimes it happens, when you are invited to a party, to come dressed as another guest. I can honestly tell you that I first watched Ruth’s video after some people said, based on the behind the camera photos, that both she and we had this element of dance in the rain in the video. Alex had this idea that water was the miracle of life. I also personally danced in the rain on “Dancing With The Stars” four years ago, so… Not to mention that it would be absurd to copy our competitors in the contest.

Later today, Paula posted this video of her dance performance from four years ago on her Facebook page, saying its her favourite dance:

Meanwhile, in an interview for Spanish blog Olevision, Ruth Lorenzo didn’t buy the coincidence explanation:

I was shocked when I saw Romania’s video. I saw little intelligence and inspiration. My manager sent me a link with a photo collage of our video images and their images. Their video is pretty, but nothing like ours.

Meow!

What do you think? Is this little feud going to hurt Paula and Ovi’s image or will is it just a rainstorm in a teacup?

People have been dancing in the rain a long time before Ruth did it. If I was to criticise anyone I would say Spain was uninspired to make such a literal video of their song.

well this year we have this kind of dance on the ACTUAL STAGE OF ESC from Hungary, Spain and Estonia, nothing from Romania……… so why so much fuss on this thing?! last year Romania, Moldova and Sweden also had this kind of dance and no one talked so much about this……….. and for god’s sake it’s only a video that has nothing to do with Romania’s performance I don’t believe that this situation will affect us, maybe we will not get points from Spain, we can survive with that :))) I don’t think that a person from Iceland from example… Read more »

Why some of you confuse the citizinship with this matter?? It’s nathing matter with citizinship and you look down to some of them.
Similarities between Miracle’s video and Dancing in the Rain is undeniably, somebody did very bad job if did not watched other videos first.
That is all, respect every country citisinship pleaseeeeeeeeeee, RESPECT is more important thing¡¡¡¡¡¡

facts talk more than words!! see both videos… romania has definitively copies Spanish video! and If the “famous” alex ceausu has not paid attention to the rest of the videos… then he is not as professional as he should.
do not worry! ruth is great! no problems with romania… if they only know copy… Spain will not have problems

@Eugene UK: You need a brain right away. So, just because Spain’s song is called “Dancing in the rain”, the rain should be banned from others music videos? Do you even realize the stupidity you are showing? Everybody does what they like, Romania wanted a dance in the rain, they have it. It’s nowhere being a copy, you know why? BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN DONE NUMEROUS TIMES BEFORE!!

expand your imagination.. there are different kind of miracles around …. the video reflects the MIRACLE OF LIFE, which was the first idea that came in director of the video’s mind…. the song reflects the MIRACLE OF LOVE between 2 persons ….. i guess sometimes may get difficult for some to get the point without the obvious, how about subtle meanings ?? i don’t think u need to mention “love, love, love” to know is a love song 😀

Its just a music video so this issue not important. But I do hope that Romania’s actual ESC performance will not contain any of the scenes from it.

In case some don’t know yet from nature science classes. Evolutionary theory places the beginning of life on earth in the oceans/water hence the miracle of life. And water brings plants and mushrooms to life every year in the meadows, forests, gardens. Again the miracle of life. But as many said the video is poor. When you have such a complex ecosystem of plants everywhere in Romania to only come with grass. What buffles me in this interview is Paula says the video director came with the idea. Wow. They did not had this miracle of life idea from the… Read more »

@ Dan RO – I completely agree with you. And thanks for being unbiased enough to give your honest opinion as a Romanian. I must add, incidentally, that I don’t believe the “our director couldn’t have watched all clips” excuse either, as it is his duty/the duty of Paula and Ovi’s entourage to be updated as to what is going on. This I don’t buy in the least.
I sort of like this stage couple; they seem charming and they sing really nice. But this cheap trick was totally uncalled for.

Eugene looks like you know everything..Tell me darling how did you realised that this is a sheer of desperation of Romania? There is no secret the most english can`t stand romanians. 🙂 . This started to become a batlle for the top 5 :). First row was btw Conchita and Aram…More contracdiction more coments and viewers on their video. Now its time for Spain and Romania to repeat the story. If your smart enough people here its all about attention seekers …The more you accusse or complain about some contenstant the more viewers and coments you will gonna get on your video…Don`t… Read more »

The spanish song is so nothing that they don’t even realized that it exists or that it’s called ‘Dancing in the rain’…. Why this whole complaining?? There will be no 12, 10 or 8 for “best video” … It’s not the EMA….

It would be absurd but yet it does replicate the same idea as Ruth’s video. Period. If that was intentional or not I couldn’t care less because at the end of the day, or more precisely, on the 10th May … it’s not the video that matters … it’s the song and everything that mirrors the song in its best way during its performance that really plays a huge role. So to speak, this is just gossip in pink for the amusement of those who just love seeing people bash each other … a cliché but nonetheless it’s real. I… Read more »

Well, I agree with Paula – it would be absurd to copy a competitor. But I personally find even more absurd not to study your competition beforehand – especially since Ruth’s video came out some time ago… And if they did study it, then why do the same thing?! Poor judgement, either way… Especially since the dancing has nothing to do with the lyrics and it adds no value to the ‘story’ (whatever this might be – I said before that I don’t understand what this miracle is supposed to be). I’m a Romanian, and I love Paula, but frankly… Read more »

Ruth isn’t the first person to use dancing in rain in a video, and other acts are allowed to do it. THIS, however, is a pretty basic copy of the choreography in Ruth’s video. The moves used in Paula and Ovi’s video are very similar to the ones in Dancing in the Rain. I don’t understand why the director even thought of including the dancing when a competitor had already use it in their promo video. Why risk the chance of negative publicity? In short, while you should be allowed to use rain dancing if you want, this is a… Read more »

It’s not gonna hurt them but the scenes are too similar. I have to say when Ruth said that she was laughing and joking.

At the end it will just be another anecdote.

Like Paula said, it would be absurd to copy a direct competitor, and in a world where everything has been said and done, it’s virtually impossible to do anything without the possibility of finding something similar somewhere, if we search deep enough. Besides, the “copy” is for the music video, that at the end of the day, we won’t see in the Eurovision stage, is it really that important? It is surprising, however, how uncanny the similarities are! It does make you rise your eyebrow, specially because from all the possible escenarios, it had to happen with two songs competing… Read more »
