The Wiwi Jury—our in-house panel of musical unprofessionals—has now reviewed all 37 Eurovision 2014 songs. It wasn’t always easy. But the jury, which consists of 19 jurors from Albania, Austria, Australia, Britain, Croatia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, the United Kingdom and the United States, took our painkillers and pressed on!

Each juror assessed each song independently, and then awarded it a score from 0 to 10. The highest and lowest scores were then dropped before calculating the average. Jurors range in age from 14 to 38, so we cut across generatons, y’all! Please note: The jury did not rate songs based on who they think will win, but rather who they want to win. This reflects our taste, and isn’t neccessarily a “Eurovision prediction”.

Hungary’s András Kállay-Saunders came out on top with an average score of 8.56. One juror said this “stirring number gives trauma rhythm and reminds victims of abuse that there is a way out, even when those closest to you don’t seem to care. Another was quick to add that he skillfully avoids “the temptation to scaremonger or preach,” resulting in powerful music with an accessible message.

Sweden’s Sanna Nielsen finished a close second with an average score of 8.35. She secured four perfect 10s, one more than Hungary. One juror nearly fainted when he heard this. “The moment Sanna gets to that first ‘uh-uh-uh-undo’ you know this one’s got it going on,” he writes. “Sanna’s strong vocals, the simple staging, and the pumping electro-chords give this entry some major oomph, and the heart beats in the bridge still give me chills.”

Ireland’s Can-linn featuring Kasey Smith finished in joint third with Romania’s Paula Seling & Ovi. Both acts earned an average of 8.06, but Ireland won the tie break on preferential votes. “With its anthemic quality and dramatic instrumentals, it is hard not to get swept up in the whole thing,” writes one juror. “The traditional Irish music and modern pop blend perfectly, avoiding both Ryan Dolan’s gimmickry and the diddly-eye (read: hot-mess) sound of Dervish. I could nit-pick and criticise the lack of lyrical depth, but to be honest why bother? I’ll be too busy holding onto my heartbeat.

The down side of Eurovision is that they never apreciate the best voices ,i know its a song competition wich is good ,but even better will be if it would be a song/voice competition not just a song competition and only then you will see the real good ones. For example Paula Selling great voice ,weak song ,Aram mp3 Great song averrage voice,Molly Smitten great voice averrage song .Sana Nielsen great voice averrage song.Andras from hungary great song ,nothing special his voice its just like an Hungary got talent ..Its reallity and we should not judge singers just because of their… Read more »

@Adriana: totaly agree, I love With Love 🙁 @Deven: true, but the performance and vocals from the 3Js was seriously terrible xD Same with Joan the next year, and they both had good songs. No winning song, but a song that should have been in the final (at least for the last place). Ireland has some very good songs last few years, especially this year. I also liked Ireland 2013, but the vocals were TOO BAD. It was just terrible, but the song itself is very good. I don´t get how Jedward made it up so high while you were… Read more »

@Timselvision I know. How Belgium and the Netherlands failed to qualify for Dusseldorf 2011 is a f**king travesty. Your country, represented by the 3J’s, had a brilliant song that could have beaten Anouk’s result last year. That kind of music flies in Germany. Belgium NEARLY qualified, but that is the same as saying they didn’t. They should have been one of the 10 songs in the final. It is just such a shame how both Belgium and The Netherlands both try so hard and this is how Europe repays them. By almost never letting them into the final. To give you… Read more »

@Deven: Belgium with Witloof Bay was also a good song, but didn´t even managed to go to the final while they only had human voices 😉

I know I am going to get a backlash for saying this. But you know, Hungary would have definitely won with Fool Moon’s ”It can’t be over”. I love the originality behind this song. There is no instrumentation in the song. It is done by people. Not instruments. It is a class tune. It sounds like one of those older American boy bands. It is a song that not even MELODIFESTIVALEN in Sweden has had yet. I do like Kallay Saunders Andras and his song. But I don’t think he will win. 🙁

Shame is not a voice competition ,otherwise most countrys wont qualify in the final…Some good songs this year but their voices are tottaly crap..If i was a jury ,as much as i would like a song i will never vote for it if the voice is crap.ever.

And so I hope it wins … against all the soap-opera around Conchita, Armenia and all those songs gaining fame and mediastism for no reason and no merit. Being good does not mean being the best .. and Hungary (together with another entry I chose not to mention) are the best songs (this is a song contest .. not a personality, not a Country vs. Country fight, not a LGBT contest, none of that even if we have damaged the contest with all those elements). With Hungary winning a nice slap in a lot of people’s faces would come in… Read more »

I’m glad that Hungary, Sweden and Ireland placed in the top 3. Kallay’s song tells a very important, powerful and accessible message and that is ‘If you are being abused, don’t give up.’ and the music in which the message is conveyed through is very radio friendly. Well, in Western Europe anyway. Sanna’s song screams one thing, QUALITY, the staging is kept simple and even though the song is quite powerful. However, I notice that certain lines in the song don’t make sense. For Example, ”Undo my sad” Like, explain that to me? Ireland’s song is a great mix between… Read more »

Though I think it a victory by Hungary and András would be great for the contest, I can’t help but feel awkward about the subject of the song. I wish I had never seen the video.

@Eugene/Margaret: I’ve read the Armenian review today. It is stated in the comment that they forget the include the points of 1 juror. They did that now and it brought down the score of Armenia to 8.05

Hungary entry is story telling about child abuse, which would make audience feel sad so unrelated eurovision song contest, child abuse and then uptempo running running running, singing about that, is there need for that!!!!!

The problem with Hungary this year is that it’s more of a radio song than something for Eurovision. I think we all can agree that it’s a good song, it really is, but it just not perfect for Eurovision.
