The United Kingdom’s Molly went hippy. Romania’s Paula Seling & Ovi worked a hologram. Poland’s Cleo and her dancers flashed a bit of cleavage. And Russia’s Tolmachevy Sisters balanced on a see-saw. But in the end European voters and a professional jury handed victory to Austria’s Conchita Wurst with Rise Like A Phoenix. “This is for everyone who believes in a future of peace and unity,” she said on stage just before her encore. “We are unstoppable.”

You can see the complete results below. What do you think? Did the best song win?

@Darren – Truly touched U would see the withdrawal of one of the Big 5 as negative for the ESC. Sure it would be because these 5 countries (UK? France, Italy, Spain, Germany) has got their specific status because of their huge financial support to make the dream come true for every artist who attends the competition and the show go on year by year. Any other country does not give as much money as they do. This is a main question to tell other participants when they let jealousy take their heart as Turkey did in 2013 as often… Read more »

@Dilara, ARMENIA is here so you can shut up.
We’re very very very proud of Aram!!

Congrats to Conchita and Austria! The biggest dissapointment for me was the UK’s low ranking, it was one of my favourite’s! But I hope the Robbie Williams rumours are true, would love that.

I have to laugh at these countries supposedly going to withdraw. I say let them, Greece is just mad cos of their poor showing, so what get over it. Rise up is catchy dance tune, but the vocals on the night were awful!! Azerbaijan welcome to the real world, it’s about time they realised that you just can’t send any old thing and expect top 5. Her vocals too were awful and the song was poor. Pull out, off ye go and to name a few others Russia Belarus etc. Show the world what ye really think or what your… Read more »

Well, some afterthoughts upon reading the various comments and stances, here and upon previous postings: – Whoever would like to withdraw/skip a year or two is more than welcome to do so (participating countries and individual followers alike); – Yes, the so-called “gimmicks” still get votes, but this beard was a statement beyond a “gimmick” thought up for the ESC stage; – Uncalled-for dance when irrelevant, XL hair/shoes/XS dresses/the excess of glitter/dizzying lights/indoor fire-fireworks (oh I could go on and on) are also “gimmicks” and I don’t see many people hating all that; – Azerbaijan got a real placing (though… Read more »

Well I didn’t see any weird changes after Dana International or Lordi won. Still after that we had normal contestants and winners. The reason Conchita had to be like this was to pass the message that if we would like to do something crazy like being a woman with beard we should be FREE to do so, without people judging us for our choice (of course without hurting anyone). It’s not cool. It’s something that had to be self explanatory but it’s not cause people like to judge others than themselves cause it’s easier. Conchita is free to be the… Read more »

Regardless of Conchita’s glamorous and controversial career, the Eurovision Song Contest has proven become a European platform for affirmation of “positive discrimination”. Be gay-friendly or not, the song was nothing special reminding me of Celine Dion’s European enterprise in the late 1990s.I just couldn get warmed up by the song. She/he could sing well but the song is below the average, let’s face it. I am thinking of the Dutch entry a lot better than the Austrian winner. Combining gay-friendly music professionals in music industry with the flood of gay-friendly televoting, the result has been imminent.I knew from the beginning… Read more »

“No neighbour voting, no block voting (except for Russia, Azerbaijan and Belarus).”

You seem to be a little bit hypocritical, don’t you? It’s bad when these countries do it, it’s totally fine when Sweden-Denmark-Norway are doing it. Europe, tolerance, hah!

Until this year Eurovision had a relatively good name in Central and Eastern Europe. It is an EBU event and the national televisions have more audience here than they have in the West. But now it becomes widely branded as a “freak show” and we will probably soon have comments of it “UK style” mocking all contestants. It is to some extent the Conchita Wurst winning factor but I think this is just a convenient pretext. Most of this rebranding is most probably due to all that booing. Though nobody will recognize it.

You have to be impressed with Conchita’s vocal performance, especially as she stood stock-still with no dancers, props or backing vocalists to help her out. So many other singers gave disappointing performances (Aram MP3, Carl Espen, Andras Kellay-Saunders, Paula and Ovi), but she nailed it. Gracious in victory, composed, humble and charming to all interviewers, and looking a hell of a lot better than most of the other women in a dress, Conchita is a true pioneer who deserves the win for sheer guts and professionalism. True, female impersonation doesn’t usually include a beard, but then it’s about time Eurovision… Read more »

@Dhani, Oikotimes is an extremely unreliable source so I wouldn’t believe that. Anyways, even if it was true it would no way be Belarus since they indirectly confirmed their 2015 participation when they said Alexander Rybak will help find their entry. I’m happy for Conchita and Austria but I don’t think she really deserved to win. The songs from Sweden (not being biased), Finland, Netherlands, Hungary, and the UK were all better than Austria’s. Really surprised with Molly, the flop of the year. I heard there were technical problems during her performance in many countries including Germany and Lithuania so… Read more »

@Dhani, Darren: I wouldn’t be surprised if Azerbaijan is one of them, especially after getting clobbered last night. Russia, quite probably, especially after inviting quite a bit of hostility at this year’s (not really the twins’ faults). I’m thinking the French might walk, after a shockingly embarrassing outcome, going home nearly broke (2 pts.), which might force them to reassess how they select their entry and what they send. The 4th one, I think, is going to be Israel. I’ll bet they are now thinking that, no matter who and what they send, they can’t catch a break at all.

I have a feeling the 3 countries will be Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. As for the Big 5, it could be either France of United Kingdom.
I would be all for those 3 countries going as they bring nothing to eurovision yet still manage to get respectable results. But, I would hate to see a big 5 member leave the eurovision. Hope that report is just a rumour

“Rise like a Phoenix” never was one of my favourite songs this year. But Conchita CONQUERED and RULED. Now I can’t agree any more with the result. Which rises the question: how didn’t ANYONE see that coming? Certainly not the Wiwi team, but not the eurofans either. It was all about Sweden, Armenia, Hungary and UK. And Spain, Ireland or Israel when it was about black horses. But never The Netherlands or Conchita. I gotta be missing something with The Netherlands. So not my cup of tea. Looking back at the previous winners of ESC….. 2002: Latvia won because of the dance/clothes change during the performance (gimmick) 2003: Turkey won because of the dance routine & belly dancing (gimmick) 2004: Ukraine won because of the warrior princess act, whips and costume (gimmick) 2005: Greece won because of the fake violin they made in the performance, half naked men, and zorba dancing (gimmick) 2006: Finland won because of the hellish costumes (gimmick) 2008: Russia won because of the violinist and ice skater (gimmick) 2009: Norway won because of the fiddle that he played (gimmick) 2013: Denmark won because… Read more »

What a great year! I’m so happy for the results. Ukraine and Spain in the top 10, Sweden and Hungary in the top 5. Switzerland and Iceland didn’t do bad either. Also the first qualification from both Montenegro and San Marino. And of course Conchita winning! On the other side, the surprises were Greece and UK not doing as good as it was expected, also the first time Italy and Azerbaijan are not in the top 10. It was a well-deserved victory. I’m happy for Conchita. I just checked the results. It seems like Azerbaijan actually gave 8 points to Austria in the tele-voting yesterday night, but the jury lowered it down to 1.
I’m sure Vienna will do a great job next year.

For all those who are mentioning the word gay, why don’t you take a little trip to the previous century and stay there. Rise like a phoenix was not great. It was amazing!! Stop commenting on country or appearance or labels. Or didn’t you listen to Iceland’s song properly….. no prejudice, right? I actually cried when she won. I think Europe was in need of a happening like this. We gave an answer to the biggots and the intolerant people in this world. I can’t describe how euphoric I am that my country, The Netherlands, came second this year. No grudge or heartburning, because being a runner up after Austria is not losing.

As for booing Russia, yeah..they are not our favorite nation at the minute and I hate them in Eurovision, but it was hardly the twins’ fault, they are 17 year old girls and to be honest, I doubt they even know about what Russia is doing in Ukraine. I did feel a liitle bit sorry for them.

And for the record, the ESC lost the credibility for me tonight, when the Netherlands came second. I mean, really? If “Rise like a…something” was sung by another artist you would have placed it far low down the table.

@Iberian – I really do wish the ESC to fall on a level where it will be just another gay club event of the many. Eurovision lost its credibility tonight – one hell of a show turned cold when Austria was declared a winner. I don’t have anything against gay men or similar but maybe that “in your face attitude” is what made Russia to write their laws and try to keep its traditions sacred. But you blame them just for that and boo their overall presence actually in CPH. Shameful, shameful.

Darren, I really hope you’re right. It would be great to see Russia and Belorus leaving the contest. And I’d like to get rid of Aserbaidjan as well. Russia and Belorus are homophobes and/or have dangerous dictators or presidents, way too keen on war and hate. Poor Ukraine won’t exist anymore thanks to lovely Putin who just takes what he wants, he’s very polite. And Azerbaidjan… I dunno, but 12 points from San Marino to Azerbaidjan? Or did they buy cell phones again in very little countries to vote as they like? However; we’ll see next year what happens in… Read more »
