Tim Schou has come a long way since his days as the lead vocalist of A Friend In London. After his victorious splash (in a speedo) on the Danish show “Stjerner På Vippen”, he towelled off, hit the recording studio in Los Angeles, and returned home with a sound all his own. He puts that on show in his new song “Supernova”, the lead single from his untitled, forthcoming album.

Schou premiered the song at Euroclub (in Club Vega) last weekend in Copenhagen in front of 1,500 people. The song has a wistful, melancholic vibe. It had the power to make a large room feel like a small space, and to silence the chatty crowd of Eurovision fans.  Schou’s vocals carry vulnerability and hurt so well, which brings an element of sincerity to this story of star-crossed lovers on the brink of a breakup. The song is an ode to loving someone even after a relationship ends. As Schou says: “I never stop loving someone I once loved”.

SUPERNOVA ARTWORKAs Schou recorded the song, rumours emerged that Usher wanted it. This comes as no surprise. This piano ballad is sentimental but it isn’t overwrought, it’s well-produced but it isn’t over-programmed. Xandy Barry, the producer behind Miley Cyrus, Muse, Backstreet Boys and the Gorrilaz, has dreamed up a number that you’ll want to have on repeat. It provides the perfect backbone for a remix bundle.

As Schou steps away from his band into the limelight, he’s moving from indie pop to something  more commercial. The sound is decidedly more “American” and mainstream, and has the capacity to appeal to a broader international audience. This Supernova shines bright—and across borders.

Score: 4/5

SUPERNOVA LYRICS — TIM SCHOU

Girl I know you like you know me
Maze of words I hear your heartbeat
Try to hide and I will find you
Run away and I will chase you

Until the end of the world
Don’t you know it’s never over
Until the end of the world
We’ll be burning like a supernova

We’ll live forever you and I
Like supernovas in the sky

Crashing into one another
Baby we are starcrossed lovers
I know that I sometimes hurt you
But you know I’ll always love you

Until the end of the world
Don’t you know it’s never over
Until the end of the world
We’ll be burning like a supernova

We’ll live forever you and I
Like supernovas in the sky
We’ll live forever you and I
Like supernovas in the sky

We’ll be burning like supernovas
We’ll be burning like supernovas
We’ll be burning like supernovas
We’ll be burning like supernovas

We’ll live forever you and I
Like supernovas in the sky

We’ll be burning like supernovas
We’ll be burning like supernovas
We’ll be burning like supernovas
We’ll be burning like supernovas
