After placing second at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, the Common Linnets are poised for world domination. Their single ‘Calm after the storm’ is a huge hit across Europe, and topped the iTunes charts in 14 different counries. We know their song is calm and soothing, but it is hitting the charts with a very loud bam!
After the contest they also released their first – but hopefully not their last – album. It’s already a big hit in The Netherlands. They’ve sold more than 50,000 albums and are the first artists to have 13 singles in the top 100 at one time.
That means they’ve reached platinum status and set a new record for the most songs in the Top 100 at any one time. It’s sweet revenge after all the criticism they faced over the past few months.
As a Dutch girl who loves Eurovision, I just had to listen to their album. Even though I’m not a big country fan, their music really touched me. They have amazing voices and they sing with so much emotion. I believe every single word they say, which is a testament to how much work they put into this album. They clearly poured themselves into each and every song.
Some songs are already familiar. They’ve previously performed “Lovers & Liars” and “Still Loving After You” on Dutch TV, but the remain as fresh and current as when we heard them before. “Give Me a Reason” and “Sun Song” are also worth a listen, but my absolute favourite is the last song on their album, ‘Love Goes On’. Ilse wrote it as an ode to her father, who passed away a couple of years ago. The lyrics are touching, and the pain that Ilse carries in her voice makes you want to cry.
Score: 4/5
Love goes on lyrics — The Common Linnets
Please don’t think that I’ve forgotten
Who you were and are to me
There’s a safe place in my heart
There you’ll always be with me
Years pass by and we get older
There’s so much you didn’t see
But your hand’s still on my shoulder
Much more than a memory
Endless highway, bring me home
All I know is that our love goes on
You’re in me and in my brothers
Yes and mom still wears your ring
For her there’ll never be another
You don’t compare to anything
Singing songs while doing dishes
Cracking jokes you filled the room
Miss your laughter and your kisses
That’s how I’ll remember you
Endless highway, bring me home
All I know is that our love goes on
Endless highway, bring me home
All I know is that our love goes on
All I know is that our love goes on

100% agreed with River – best impulse buy in a LONG while. This album is stunningly good. ’nuff said
They deserved it so much. Ilse said that this was the first time that someone wanted to have her/them play instead of her having to beg for a release of her album. And then she cried it was really sweet. Her reaction was: Da’s echt mooi man/That’s so great!

Conchita may be one-hit wonder, but these two are golden and may continue their trip to the stars throughout this year and why not after… I do know that they both are respected singers alone and have come up with this project only months ago to create an album and to represent the NL on ESC, but please, stay. Well, no matter, I will still check their separate albums if they don’t continue together. This is why I love ESC – to learn about new artists and their music. This year, these two were the ones, last year it was… Read more »

Love the entire album, best impulse purchase I have made so far this year!! 🙂
Yeah – well done to them. I always likes Calm After The Storm – I thought it was the best produced song in the competition. My only worry about it was, I wondered if it would grab the attention of the audience in the 3 minutes they had to hear it. Well – it sure grabbed their attention alright. Should be a hit world wide now. Go guys!
