First of all, our thoughts go to the victims and the tens of thousands of people affected by these historic floods, which are still threatening and disrupting lives in the Balkans. It was crazy to hear, however, that the Eurovision winner was blamed for the deluge!

“The Economist” writes that Irinej, the patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, used the floods to attack the country’s lesbian and gay community as well as Conchita Wurst , claiming that the floods were “divine punishment for their vices”. The patriarch is also quoted saying that “God is thus washing Serbia of its sins”.

According to telegraf.rs, Amfilohije, the patriarch of Montenegro, joined the blaming game, saying that people should repent and repel the “Jesus-like figure” of Conchita Wurst. Website e.novine.com quotes the same priest as saying, “This [flood] is not a coincidence, but a warning. God sent the rains as a reminder that people should not join the wild side”.

We know that after each natural disaster, there will be religious nutters that will blame the gays for it, but this simply takes the cake. Austria wins Eurovision, and God decides to punish Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina? That sounds like just punishment indeed…

What do you make of this outrageous claim?

This is Serbian orthodox extremist church. they have always worked against humanity and civilization. They like to have their people told what to do and say.

Someone needs to have a serious word with God about his aim; he floods the Balkans but leaves London, Brighton, Amsterdam and Berlin alone, all gay hotspots, one would think God could do better than that.

I find Christianity particularly disgusting and this is just another example of it. However, at least Christianity allows an open discourse without violence. Can you imagine if this happened within Islam? Mr. Conchita Wurst would have to go into hiding for fear of his/her life.

This is plain sad and mean.

Everyone should be supporting each other and not putting each other.

No one here is any bettet, like really people have died and many are missing. Would you like it if a massive flood wiped your town or city out?

Show some respect please.

Wich God is this Patriarch talking about… not about mine… Our God loves us in the way we are, in the way has created us. Every of us is especial, is a God’s creation. Pope Francis has said that he is not able to say what the people should do in their lifes in reference to the Gay community. He’s said also that God bless any kind of love.

Which god are we talking about here?
Oh it doesn’t matter, superstitious beliefs should have been ditched long ago. These religious nutters should go back to their caves & bang sticks together.

What??!!!!! o.O Sorry, but these people, who actually think these floods are warning (washing, whatever), are definitely out of their mind…

Now we see how ridiculous religions can be. I’m sorry if I’m offending anyone’s beliefs, but I’m sure, even if there is a god or more, he/she is not as judgmental and hateful as he/she is described in the so-called holly books. And s/he’s probably not so stupid that s/he would kill people in Balkans just because someone from Austria won a contest.

I think believing in god is the only thing that is strange. Conchita does what she wants and is attacked by crazy religious freaks. Who uses a fake storybook to justify hate.

I’m from Serbia and this is so embarrassing. No wonder people in Serbia are losing respect for the Orthodox Church (SPC). Only insane or highly manipulative person could state something like this.

In United Kingdom was a similar story like this….Some party from the UK called UKIP,blaimed the gay marriage for the floods in the UK last winter..:)Crazy people or should i say nuts people are everywhere and we have to accept them :)The Church is more worrid that they cant take money from people anymore…They should stay in the chruch and pray not getting involved in politics.

Gay people

Bringing an end to the continent of Europe and even summoning floods with nothing but a ball gown and a flawless vocal since 2014.

No wonder Putin’s worried in case Conchita sends another one of these to wipe the bigoted Kremlin out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chelyabinsk_meteor

We’re just the wrong crowd to talk about this. Sure, I could say that if floods are the punishment for Conchita, then Austria must be a beautiful lake by now.

But that doesn’t help. These things need to be said to the people that actually listen to the Serbian Orthodox Church. And I’m guessing that they’re not here on this site.

The news of the floods is too sad to comment on, and these alleged statements are just too idiotic to reply to. I seriously hope, though, some leaders will be brave enough to counter-state these atrocities, and I wouldn’t be surprised if other religious leaders would spoke for peace and respect if this continues to escalate. The very Pope, for example. That would be a sensible punch in the face of this preposterous bigotry.

So if this is some sort of weird reverse punishment – where the countries that didn’t participate are the ones punished – then should we expect that all the countries who awarded 12 points to Austria will enjoy splendid weather this year? In that case, let’s start planning holidays in Belgium, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom!

Although my condolences go out to those affected by the floods, I have to say that this is the most ridiculous claim I’ve ever heard today. I mean Conchita hasn’t done anything wrong except wear a beard, win Eurovision and anger ultra-conservative (and somewhat homophobic) countries such as Russia.

If Serbia and Bosnia aren’t happy with it then they should not return next year. That way all the money meant for ESC could go to rebuilding flooded cities and whatnot.

If I recall, Noah received a message from God that he was going to flood the earth. These people did not get that text, and they were flooded like everyone else. Repent sinner. Repent.

Maybe God punished them for not entering Eurovision this year, sounds more logic to me, because it doesn’t make any sense if they didn’t even vote for her! They can’t be punished for something they didn’t have anything to do with!

In all seriousness… no I’m not going to do a serious statement about such an idiotic statement.

(But yeah, my heart goes for the victims of these floods, that is a serious matter)
