Anton Ewald’s latest track “This Could Be Something” premiered on the expressen.se website last week. All these days later, I am still cooling down: This imagery is hot. For this autotune dance track, Anton enlisted the help of Danish superstar Medina.With seven Danish number ones to her name, she knows the score—and, as this video shows, she also knows how to get a response from Anton. At 02.35, he whispers, ‘..Baby, let me f**k you’. Fortunately, Anton delivers the lyric innocently enough to avoid a parental advisory label. Medina smoulders on the screen next to Anton, who butches it up in leather. Their interaction is believable, and as a duo, they work well together.
Sadly, the track is too lightweight to make an impact on its own. It’s full of overcooked coos and generic EDM beats. It doesn’t stand out from the bargain bin of dance-pop offerings that currently flood the market. And I’m sorry: these lyrics need to go: “This could be something, ooh ohh, Baby close up and lay here, Let me watch your naked body up against mine.” Cheap and predictable.
It’s unfortunate that Anton, an amazing dancer, continues to rely on his movement rather than his voice or fresh material. In the last two years, he has made a mark on the Swedish national pre-selection with “Begging” and “Natural“, advancing to the finals both times. Prior to this, he featured as a backup dancer in the 2009 and 2012 editions of the contest. But to properly take centre stage he needs to combine music with all the motion.
Anton doesn’t take kindly to criticism. However, I hope that this review helps steer him in the right direction. With his killer looks and his badass dance steps, he could have a bright future ahead of him. He just needs to start choosing his material more carefully.
