After a long wait, Eurovision 2013 winner Emmelie de Forest has finally released her new track “Drunk Tonight”. She previously teased us with provocative bikini shots on Instagram, which led us to believe this would be a hot summer dance track. Talk about a decoy! As it turns out “Drunk Tonight” is a beautiful pop ballad.

Some critics may argue that “Drunk Tonight” is a bit too generic, and that it dives too deep into pop. But Emmelie is wise to broaden her horizons. This song will connect with a wider, non-Eurovision audience, and it has a chance, albeit a slim one, to chart outside of Europe. At the very least it lets Emmelie test the waters beyond her comfort zone. As in sport, you need to innovate and elevate or get left behind…

Even with its more pronounced pop influences, the song retains a hint of the Earth Goddess we’ve come to know on her previous singles “Only Teardrops“, “Rainmakerand “Hunter & Prey“. That should be enough to sate her fan base. If not, maybe the photo will…

Drunk Tonight lyrics – Emmelie de Forest

Nothing is worse than a drunk ex text
So stop wherever you are
I know this hurts and it’s all a mess
But stop and live with the scars

Bridge:
What we had is never coming back
And what you did will never be forgotten
You can’t fix it it’s already dead
So let it go

Chorus:
I just think you’re drunk tonight
Drunk tonight
You don’t really want me back
I just think you’re broke inside, sad and high
You don’t really want me back
So put down the phone
It’s time to go home
I just think you’re drunk tonight
Drunk tonight
You don’t really want me back

Verse 2:
Nothing you say can ever erase
the way you messed with my head
and nothing you do will ever ring true
you deserve every single regret

Bridge 2:
What we had is never coming back
And what you did will never be forgotten
You can’t fix it it’s all in your head
So let it go

Chorus:
I just think you’re drunk tonight
Drunk tonight
You don’t really want me back
I just think you’re broke inside, sad and high
You don’t really want me back
So put down the phone
It’s time to go home
I just think you’re drunk tonight
Drunk tonight
You don’t really want me back

Go to bed, sleep off your sorrow
this will all be gone tomorrow

I just think you’re drunk tonight
You don’t really want me back
I just think you’re sad and high
You don’t really want me back
So put down the phone
It’s time to go home
Just leave me alone

I don’t wanna have this fight
I’m sick and tired
I don’t even want you back
You’re probably in a bar somewhere and faking tears
I’m never gonna want you back
So put down the phone
It’s time to go home
I just think you’re drunk tonight
Drunk tonight
You don’t really want me back

I miss the folk pop sound, that’s what made her unique. This still is a good song, nothing really special but it’s not bad.

I really don’t like her look in the picture. They made her look cheap.

I actually feel it doesn’t deviate that much from all of Emmelie’s material, it sounds like yet another song from her debut album, she has a very characteristic sound and this song falls under that. That being said, I do like it! But I agree, the cover image and the song title can be very deceiving! I also thought the song would be completely different.

I think it’s one of the best songs this year so far. I love Emmelie’s voice and the lyrics are very touching. I’m sure many people can relate to this.
