Since her Eurovision win back in May, Conchita Wurst has often been dismissed as a mere gay icon (as if that were a bad thing). But of course she’s so much more. Last weekend, during a talk at The Observer Ideas Festival in London she proved that her “we are unstoppable” declaration wasn’t a worthless platitude.

Conchita was the star speaker (well in our eyes anyways) at the prestigious event, which also featured the likes of Edward Snowden, Tine Tempah and Kim Dotcom. The “That’s What I Am” songstress dedicated her speech to the UK’s place in Europe, a particularly relevant topic given the rise of UKIP and the recent Scottish referendum. She alludes to Europe’s role in maintaining peace, inventing democracy and promoting freedom, arguing that unity is the key. She’s not just a gay icon folks. She’s an icon for ALL!

Robert, I’m going to assume you are not from the UK, because if you were, you’d understand. My country did a lot for Europe along with France and others in 1945, as Conchita said, yet now people here say they don’t want to be European. Don’t get me wrong, you hear stories how British people pay a LOT of tax and it ends up going to Polish people or Lithuanian people who choose to live here and not work, and it makes you think I HATE THE E.U. AND IT’S OPEN BIRDERS, but at the end f the day, a… Read more »

My only critic about her speech is the same I do to very simple repetitive meaningless pop songs … Those words have been heard a millions times before by people of all good intentions and big dreams … and although that is not wrong, it has no impact at all if you’re not going say something that sets you apart and makes people think. Besides the “unstoppable” adjective is becoming quite boring at this stage … She’s lucky she won Eurovision with her LGBT character and message and the beard of course, but to be honest she should have just… Read more »

This speech wasn’t remotely ‘eloquent’. Most of it made no sense and it sounded like she lost her place and got confused.

What is it with this site? Conchita can do no wrong?

I’m a big fan of hers but let’s not praise her where praise isn’t due. Her singing ‘Rise’ was fabulous but the speech? Not good.

Wow! I’m so impressed by this speech, she really is a very intelligent person – also politically speaking. Thank you Conchita!
