Tonight the Luxembourg Eurovision plot takes yet another turn, with the Luxemburger Wort alerting us to the latest development in the country’s plans.
Luxembourg euro-fans have had a roller-coaster couple of days. It all began on Saturday night, after Ireland’s Linda Martin badgered the Minister for Culture, Maggy Nagel, into saying “yes” to a Grand Duchy comeback. But by yesterday hopes were dashed, as the Minister publically retracted her “yes”, labelling it a “misunderstanding”.
However, there is hope once more, as in an unprecedented move Luxembourg could potentially be entering a joint entry with fellow micro-state San Marino.
The Luxemburger Wort reports that singer Thirerry Mersch has proposed that he will represent the Benelux nation, by qualifying through San Marino. His entry would be a duet, with a San Marinese female singer, giving rise to one song but from two countries.
As usual money is the big issue. According to the paper, the bulk of the costs would be picked up by San Marino RTV, who would also take responsibility for broadcasting the event. This would in effect negate the need for Luxembourgish broadcaster RTL to contribute.
But if Mersh’s vision is to come to fruition, the Luxembourgers will also be required to pay their way. Apparently a production company has already pledged a substantial amount, while the Ministry of Culture has issued a provisional quote. By Wort’s calculations this leaves a relatively small shortfall.
How realistic are the plans? A collaboration such as this would be historic. Would the EBU rules allow for it? And who would the San Marinese female be? Surely not Valentina Monetta? And there’s also the issue of deadlines to be met. The San Marinese have allegedly moved their’s several times, viewing this as an attractive option for 2015. However, if that’s the case why did Minister Nagel bother to retract her “yes” so promptly? Surely she’d have been better off to wait and see where this proposal led to, particularly as her department has supposedly issued a quote.
It seems like the issue of Luxembourgish Eurovision participation isn’t going to be quite as clear cut as previously thought.
Really no matter if someone doesn’t understand then its up to other viewers that they
will assist, so here it happens.
Twelve points go to… San Maruxembourg!
I don’t love the idea of joint entries, but the side-by-side pictures of Anne-Marie David and Valentina “V-Money” Monetta are matched perfectly.
Luxembourg has tons and tons of money.
Take it from a me a native Luxembourger
Luxembourg doesn’t want to compete because they don’t want to be embarrassed by doing badly look at the other small countries Monaco, Andorra etc.. I would have through with San Marino finally qualifying they would have gave more thought to it.
Oh well they’ll never return with RTL since they are just a news channel now.
Officially, it will just be San Marino’s entry, right? EBU can’t possibly allow a merge of two countries in a more formal way?
I’d rather see no Luxembourg than two joint countries.
Wait, how is this going to work? Is it going to be something like Six4One back in 2006, when artists from 6 countries represented Switzerland (so the two artists would represent Luxembourg OR San Marino)?
Or is it what I’m thinking that the artists represent both Luxembourg AND San Marino? Isn’t this against the rules for artists to represent more than one country at once though?
The thing is that both nations are completely different and not even neighbours. It’s not like Luxembourg participates with the Netherlands or Leichtenstein.
Also EBU wouldn’t allow this.
I still don’t get how Luxembourg cannot afford a Eurovision entry
This would Sound great!
I want Valentina to break a Eurovision record by participating 4 years in a row XD
It might be the only way the microstates can afford to come back. Split costs, split entires, vote as one unit.
Monaco/Andorra
San Marino/Luxembourg
Lichtenstein?
Nooooo!!!!!! Dont do duet just send valentina monetta
Ultimately no, then other countries will try to do the same save $. Let them spend! Spend, I say!
Well, of course the EBU will let him duet, but they almost certainly won’t count it as a “joint” participation. It’d just be a singer from Luxembourg competing with a singer from San Marino under the Sammarinese flag with most of the backing coming from SMRTV. It’s like this year’s Cypriot entry. Just because MAD TV out of Greece is helping doesn’t mean it’ll be a joint Greek-Cypriot entry.
Tbh, this sounds like science fiction.
Well why not? I think it’s a great idea! 😀
Together NO
I hope that they will participate apart from each other. Not a joint entry…
I HOPE!!! 🙂
NO! I don’t want joint entries!
