Following Conchita Wurst’s victory at Eurovision 2014, we were quick to applaud the Russian public for throwing its support behind the Austrian drag queen and her song “Rise Like a Phoenix” (in terms of the televote, anyway). The bearded lady, we learned, has plenty of fans in Russia. After watching this weekend’s Skate Canada gala show, we’re pretty sure that Russian figure skating prodigy Anna Pogorilaya is a fan, too.

Pogorilaya, who won the event ahead of American Ashley Wagner, chose to skate to Conchita’s “Rise Like a Phoenix” during the gala exhibition. She starts off all dark and sultry, and, as the music reaches its climax, rips off her costume to reveal a glittering gold dress. Perhaps she learned to be dramatic from Conchita! In any event, we love it. Well done!

As a Eurovision and ice skating fan, i can say that i am very glad about that. I think other skaters can use Eurovision songs like that. Finally, thank you to William for put together ice skating and Eurovision.

I’m surprised no one has skated to Euphoria or Only Teardrops yet.

That Russian skating woman should’ve performed to “Dancing in the Rain.”
