JUNIOR EUROVISION 2013 IN KIEV, UKRAINE

“#BeCreative” – slogan Junior Eurovision 2013

Today we finish our flashbacks with a recap of last year’s contest. Ukraine hosted in Kyiv, calling on Timur and Zlata to emcee the night’s proceedings. The contest also marked the end of peace in Ukraine. Mere days before the contest, protests began in Kiev’s main square, the Maidan. These protests grew quickly afterwards.

THE WINNER

Keeping it simple, eleven-year-old Gaia won the contest with her ballad “The Start“. It was a very mature entry, one that would do well even in the adult contest, and continued the tradition of a more modern winning entry. Her modernity even carried over to Malta, where most of the following year’s contestants have adult-style entries.

After the contest, she was awarded the honor of “Xirka Gieh ir-Repubblika”, one of Malta’s highest honors. She’s currently the youngest person with this title.

THE BEST OF THE REST

Russia shone, once again. Dayana’s “Mechtay” (Dream On) was a banger, a very memorable tune that still keeps me going today! Her vocals were very powerful, and she would have been a near-certain winner if Gaia had not competed.

San Marino’s Michele was also a star on the night. He set the precedent for retro-style entries from the microstate, and blew us away with his MJ-esque vocals.

UNSUNG HEROES

Barbara Popovic’s “Ohrid i muzika” scored fifth place with us, but that was only with a studio version. The song was too fast for Barbara, who couldn’t keep up with it all. Her dancers redeemed part of the performance, but her fate was sealed. Unfortunately, she was also blamed for her country’s withdrawal this year. That’s not fair: She tried her best, and we still love her song!

Honestly, I didn’t like almost any entry last year except for Malta and Ukraine, and even though Sofia Tarasova was my top favourite, Gaia has a voice way superior to any other contestant that year and deserved to win, so I’m quite content with the results.

Russia would certainly have won? They didn’t even finish second! Ukraine was much better than them.

My favorites were the Netherlands, Russia and Malta. I also liked Macedonia, before she sang live.

My favorite of the year was Malta’s winning song, a truly deserved victory. San Marino’s “O-o-O Solo Intorno A Me” was my near winner. “We Are One” and “Me and My Guitar” follow closely.

My favourite was Ukraine but I also enjoyed Russia, Malta, Macedonia, Belarus, Sweden, and Azerbaijan. San Marino and Moldova were my bottom two.

I was indeed a shame Macedonia was off tune the whole time during the live performance. I was positive it was going to go top 5 before I saw the actual show. The song itself was very strong.
