Just days after its neighbour Spain announced who it has chosen to sing at the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna, Portugal is now starting their national selection process. Broadcaster RTP will once again use the program Festival da Canção to choose the entry, as has been done every year but 2005.

RTP has confirmed that twelve broadcasters have been invited to compose songs for the artists. This is typical in Festival da Canção, which focuses heavily on composing rather than singing. No further details about the composers or the artists are have been announced.

While we are still mourning the non-qualification of last’s year’s Portuguese contestant Suzy, who missed the final by only one point, we are hopeful that Portugal can return to the final for the first time since 2010. Despite being saddled with death threats after Festival da Canção, Suzy has achieved great success and keeps working the Eurovision fan circuit. She will be stopping in London next weekend after her journey to Qatar.

Let’s see… I’ve been thinking of Pedro Madeira or Jorge Leiria, Portugal’s JESC representatives, to enter this year’s Festival do Cancao. They’re old enough to attend regular Eurovision.

RTP never learns, does it? Using this sort of method, Portugal can kiss bye to consistent qualifications and left-hand scoreboard finishes.
