Tere Estonia! Eesti Laul 2015 — Estonia’s national selection for Eurovision — begins on February 7 with the first semi-final. So the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of musical unprofessionals — is busy reviewing the ten acts that will compete in that heat. Up next it’s Elisa Kolk with her song “Superlove”. In our Eesti Laul 2015 poll, Elisa is currently in second place. Will she end up as one of the favourites of the Wiwi Jury? Read on to find out…

Reviews: Elisa Kolk’s “Superlove”

Angus: ‘Superlove’ represents for the Eurovision ballad in Estonia. It is a very Disney song but that did Zlata Ognevich no harm in Malmö in 2013. Likely the most professional entry among the bunch, Elisa will clear her semi-final with ease. She serves up dramatic ballad and we’re all gonna eat it.

Score: 9/10

Anthony: I first thought “Superlove” would be uptempo, but it wasn’t to be. A simple, sweet ballad which brings back memories of Estonia’s 2013 entry, although it sounds more like something out of Hannah Montana. My concern for Elisa is that her vocals need to have the wow factor.

Score: 7.5/10

Chris: Elisa is a wonderful vocalist and “Superlove” feels like a very fitting song for a 17-year old star. It’s a bit like an X-Factor winner’s song: very radio friendly but clichéd. It would probably be an obvious JESC winner, but in the wider Eurovision picture it might struggle. Certainly a standout in Eesti Laul, though, and probably should win the whole thing.

Score: 8/10

JoElisa Kolk 2sh: ‘Superlove’ is the obvious standout in the first semi final of Eesti Laul 2015. Yeah, it’s a bit of a dated ballad, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. Elisa has a great voice, and the song builds into something a bit more upbeat. I don’t think it would be a bad choice for Estonia. There’s so much worse in this semi final.

Score: 8/10

Patrick: There is the silver lining, the ray of hope, the glimmer of light – SUPERLOVE! Even though the song is a bit cheesy, I really love it! Elisa Kolk is a stunning woman – great voice, beautiful and a wonderful personality! “Superlove” is one of just a few good songs and it will rise, rise into the Eurovision sky! Flashbacks of Latvia’s Samanta Tina and “I need a hero” reminds me that anything can happen! All the best to you amazing girl!

Score: 9/10

Ramadan: “Superlove” is just an okay ballad. I’m not a fan of the horrible lyrics, especially in the chorus. Elisa has a beautiful voice that deserves a better song.

Score: 4/10

Robyn: Quick test: is Elisa’s “Superlove” as good as Charlie XCX’s song of the same name? No, it is not. Instead of a bright pop tune, it’s a plain ballad with nothing remarkable about it. Elisa has a nice enough voice, but the snooze fest of the song lets her down.

Score: 2/10

Sami: This is so cheesy, so full of cliches and just so made for Eurovision that I can’t really take it as a serious love song. I like the chorus, but it’s so dull and dated. This could’ve done well in Eurovision maybe five years ago, but if Estonia is looking for another victory, this isn’t the song to send.

Score: 2/10

Sopon: This is the runaway favorite for this semifinal, and rightfully so. The song is modern and sweet, just like young Elisa herself. She’s a rising Estonian teen idol, and this can cement her international career. It’s an inoffensive song, but a good composition if Estonia wants to play it safe.

Score: 9/10

WIWI JURY AVERAGE: 6.5/10

This is song sounds so bad compared to some of the songs they have in their selection. Very amateur-ish and simply NOT GOOD.

I am all about the ballads but this is just a mix of Slovakia 2011 and something from Junior Eurovision. Simply put, No. 1.5/10

Finally someone who knows some of Charli XCX’s lesser known yet amazing songs, I salute you Robyn.

As for Elisa’s song, it’s average. Not the best of Eesti Laul but not the worst. If it does win it’ll qualify, don’t think it’ll challenge for an ESC win though. 7/10
