As we continue our introductions of this year’s Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins contestants, we turn to the lovely María Ólafsdóttir and her song “Lítil Skref” (Small Steps).

This is María’s first time in Eurovision, but the 22-year-old singer is nowhere near to being a rookie when it comes to performance. She has been belching it out since childhood, but until now her main focus has been the theater. Amongst her most notable roles was playing one of the Von Trapp children in the Sound of Music, as well as appearing in a Michael Jackson tribute show, which was a huge hit in Iceland. She has also participated in numerous musicals through her school. It was in one of those shows that she met the boys of the StopWaitGo production team.

“I’ve known the guys for several years now,” she tells me. “They know me and my voice inside out, so they had no trouble coming up with a song that fit me perfectly.”

As you may recall, the StopWaitGo team is also responsible for Friðrik Dór’s beautiful ballad in this year’s national final.

“I fell for the song the second I heard it,” she says. “It has so much feeling and there was never a doubt in my mind. I wanted to perform this. I’ve been a huge fan of the contest ever since I remember and I always wanted to participate.”

María says that “Euphoria” is her all-time favorite song from ESC. “Lítil Skref” is filled with emotions, just like Loreen’s hit: The song is about moving on and not let anything or anybody break you down.

María was not a fan of the gender quota that RÚV planned during this year’s submission period. She says that it should not matter at any point whether the composer is male or female. It’s the quality of the song that matters, and there is no fairness in choosing a song based on gender. There you go!

“Lítil Skref” was originally composed in English and María would prefer to perform in English should she make it all the way to Vienna.

We’re hoping for the best and sending María loads of luck! What about you? Please share your opinion below this acoustic version of the song.
