The Wiwi Jury — our in-house team of music unprofessionals — is continuing its journey through Hungary. Today we’re rating the military themed performance by Zoltán Mujahid. “Beside You” is a good pop song, which has found favour with the A Dal jury. A lot of people think it’s a love song, but it was inspired one of Zoltán’s ill friend. Let’s see what our team think about this finalist. Can he win? Read on to find out…
Angus: The militaristic style and pyrotechnics here are a thin veil for an unremarkable song. Also note to the choreographer: the finger-wagging looks ridiculous.
Score: 4/10
Deban: A sweet love song dressed in military armour. I’m drawn to the story and it’s memorable chorus. The verses here are well paced, and clever in its composition and delivery. Zoltan takes this gig seriously. When he hits the peak with his falsetto, you know he’s ready to battle!
Score: 8/10
Renske: This is still my favourite song in A Dal 2015. Zoltán is vocally a lot better and more relaxed than in his performance during the heat. I’m still not sure about the staging, but I think on a big stage this will be look better. The only thing that I don’t like are the backing vocals, they don’t mesh well with Zoltán’s voice.
Score: 9/10
Robyn: Zoltán is one of the best male performers at A Dal, with his versatile soul voice. He also has a very expressive face, but in the semi-final he toned down the the goofy expressions of the heats. I’m not quite feeling the military staging, but “Beside You” is a competently performed song.
Score: 6/10
Max: On the first listen I misheard “I’m beside you” for “I’m inside you” which would have been a completely different thing altogether. It’s got some nice rock elements and a simple melody that we can all bob along to. His voice isn’t the best, especially on the long notes but it’s a pretty harmless song. Also, Zoltan has some of the strangest facial expressions I’ve ever seen.
Score: 6/10
Patrick: Zoltan gets better and better every time! His song is great and his vocals are so strong! I’m still impressed with the opening and the fire, the staging itself and his clothing – it’s something special! He might not win the final but he can be proud of himself! I hope for the best!
Score: 9/10
Padraig: This is all so two-thousand-and-late! In recent years I’ve seen countless numbers of male vocalists churn out similar numbers, unsurprisingly they’ve all slipped into anonymity. And what’s with the military styling – is Hungary only discovering Cheryl Cole now? At least her song had the word “fight” in the title. “Beside You” has no such link and the costumes end up being a pointless distraction. The vocals are on point though, I’ll give him that much.
Score: 6/10
Judit: When MTVA released the 30 songs for A Dal 2015, this was instantly my favourite. I have to admit that his live vocal isn’t the best, but it’s a really good song, with memorable staging. If we send him, I won’t be disappointed at all.
Score: 8/10
Francesca: It’s actually an interesting song. It’s like an anthem from Coldplay. The chorus is mixed for me (the background singers are so unnecessary to repeat “beside you”). The verses are so cool, Zoltan has the pipes, and I’m excited to see him more!
Score: 9.5/10
Wiwi Jury Average: 7.27/10
