Electro Velvet have just been announced by the BBC to be the United Kingdom’s representative for Eurovision 2015! The duo will be performing the song “Still in Love With You” on stage in Vienna, having been announced on the Artist Reveal show on the BBC’s Red Button service.

The BBC were keeping tight lipped on the name of the UK’s act, having made the selection internally after an open submission process. Despite earlier rumours floating that the act would be former X Factor winner Alexandra Burke, it seems that we were all wrong and instead, Electro Velvet will be flying the flag for the UK.

Reaction: Electro Velvet’s “Still in Love with You”

ABOUT ELECTRO VELVET

Bianca and Alex make up the band, who have a retro “1920s, boys and girls club” style. We certainly were not expecting this! When talking about the song, Bianca said “We’ve always had faith in the song. It’s so fun and so catchy!”

Bianca has previously appeared on the UK’s version of the Voice, but unfortunately none of the judges turned around for her in her audition. A charity worker, she also suffers from the condition cystic fibrosis, but has not let the condition get in the way of her music career. Alex, meanwhile, performs as Mick Jagger in a Rolling Stones tribute band.

The duo will be hoping to reverse the UK’s fortunes as of late, with the country having yet to make the top ten in this decade. Last year, Molly Smitten-Downes was hyped up by many to do well for the UK but ended up in a disappointing 17th place in the final standings, but it was still an improvement on the likes of Bonnie Tyler and Englebert Humperdinck.

Are Electro Velvet the right act then? Early reactions seem to suggest that y’all don’t think they are…but is it different enough to stand out? Could the UK can make a push for the top 10 or even better this year, or is it bound to be another year of hurt? Let us know what you think in the comments or on our Twitter, Facebook or Tumblr!

This is a joke, right? How more horrid can UK get? After such a good effort in 2014, how can the BBC send such a nonsensical piece? Good that the reliable friend Australia will take part and avoid the null point…

I’m sick of all the negative comments about our entry. I swear we could send Adele and you would all still moan lol. This is our best entry in years, it’s fresh and original and is going to stand out amongst a very ballad-y year and televoters/juries will eat it up.

I don’t get the hate either. But if they do well with their stage performance, they might actually rock out. Better if they are do a convincing Charleston dance regardless of the number of people on stage. I am optimistic about them this year.

Britain, Britain, Britain ….:( you gave me so much hope last year when Molly Smitten-Downes was chosen with such a powerful song, but now, you return to your old ways. I’m sorry UK, but this doesn’t cut it for me, I’m not a fan. The BBC should use The Voice as it’s method of selecting a Eurovision entry, seeing as nothing ever happens the winner of the uk version, they could put it to good use. The fact that the female singer didn’t get any of the chairs turned around for her is kind of self explanatory, and, not being… Read more »

Hey everyone,

We’ve set up a petition for the UK to create a Melodifestivalen style national selection format for 2016 onwards, to end this embarrassing run of terrible entries. It would be great if as many of you as possible could sign the petition, and follow the project on Twitter @ESCGrandPrix.

Thanks!

Why don’t UK simply let Australia participate for them from now on? Well, it’s not exactly an awful song… it’s happy but too disappointing… UK and Germany, the weakest from the the Big Five….

It isn’t the worst one yet because we have Finland this year. Also most people who comment here aren’t from the UK…

I think people in the UK are by nature quick to be self critical, negative and pessimistic … it migh seem arrogant or rude to be confident, positive and optimistic. The overwhelming number of negative comments on here kind of proves that to me. But I see no need for this amount of negativity. Stop being so dramatic. I’m a die hard UK Eurovison fan, and this enter is by no means the worst on offer so far this year and it’s very diffent to much of its completion. Good staging will see it do well in May! Have some… Read more »

BUT…it just wouldn’t be Eurovision, without at least one novelty song, or comedy act.

Of course that it will stand out in the recap, doesn’t mean that Europe is gonna vote for them, hahaha.

Listen, when Eurovision releases the ‘Songs selected up to week 10’ video, im sure this act will stand out. Whether you like it or not. It Is different and will get some attention. I diddnt like Ireland at first until i heard it surrounded by the other songs this year.

It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing. Another ‘Miss Kiss Bang Bang’ fiasco awaiting, but ain’t it good to know UK got a special friend this year (Australia).

Wow, so overwhelmingly bad comments. My first impressions are rather good. It is funny, catchy and happy, which is a rarity this year. And they are very likable. Video is old-fashioned and witty. Why not? It’s not near to be my favorite, but come on, it beats Georgia, Finland, Moldova, Denmark and Belarus anyday.

I did hate it, but now i like it abit. But if Molly diddnt do well than sadly i dont see this doing any better. I just hope the other songs selcted are very generic. SO we kind of stand out

It is a superb song, funny, catchy. It reminds me the music from Woody Allen’s movies. The man’s voice is so amazing. I can’t take my eyes off the videoclip! BUT! The refrain is just too mediocre and it is my main objection. I don’t think it is a serious proposition for Eurovision, rather for a light party 😉 So many people have been complaining about too many ballads, so… 😛

Why do I have this unsettling feeling that this will turn into Alex Swings Oscar Swings? Germany 2009 was absolutely one of my least liked entries from recent years. It’s going to be some happy overly staged act. Why BBC, why? Don’t give up after one year of putting an effort…

This is so wrong it is right

Reminds me of the schoolgirls in 2006, that grew up to be flight attendants in 2007 and then 2008 was all about the disco groove …. The journey continues now these girls are all pearls and feathers and dancing the swing …… It would be funny if they come out of an old record player like Alyona came out of a disco ball back in 2013 !!!!
BBC made the ultimate joke this year, IT’S your turn EUROPE !!!!!

Hilariously bad, but I love it for that fact !!!!

Lads, seriously?!

It’s SO different to anything I have heard in the Eurovision Song Contest in recent years. I honestly don’t get the hate. I think that if it is staged well, it will do well. But win against Estonia, Italy, Sweden (Provided Måns wins next week.), Australia or even Ireland, I’m not sure. Big question mark over the UK.

I’m actually really pistes at some of you right now, you complain about how many ballads there are and when electro swing comes up you have to make it seem like, e ****. It is in my eyes a more lively version of Estonia and so I love it.

By the way the number of ballads this year is totally exaggerated. There are only six of them so far (France, Latvia, Ireland, Greece, Hungary and Cyprus)

Mar

They attempted to modernize 20’s swing and absolutely failed at making it catchy or compelling in any way, shame. They should get some points for originality, but this is going straight to the bottom of the right side of the scoreboard.

I thought this would finally be the year when all the big 5 would deliver good songs and earn their place in the final, but the UK just had to go and ruin it.

It’s that type of song that it takes a couple of listens to actually like it. When I heard it the first time, I was thinking “oh my god what is this” but after listening to it the second and third time I kind of liked it. It won’t win that’s for sure… But you never know what can happen.

My first thought was that it sounds like an electrified Legend of Korra soundtrack. But it really goes nowhere and I don’t think it’s remarkable at all, just… Did the UK jury actually pay attention to the songs? I can’t quite believe this song stands out of all the submissions. It’s not bad, only a big time meh imo. Maybe it will do well.

I can see everyone’s point of view. I’m so confused. I don’t know if I love it or hate it. I’m agreeing with absolutely everyone’s comments. I think due to the heavy ballads we have this. I can see this standing out. Not a winner but I’m thinking at least 15th place. Ever since Engleberr we’ve only gone up the score board!!! IIM SO CONFUSED I JUST CANT
