Icelandic newcomer María Ólafsdóttir might not have much performance experience, but her team are bringing out the big guns. The volcanic Hera Björk has been called home from sunny Chile and will support María on stage as a backing vocalist for the performance of “Unbroken” in Vienna.
Hera and her family moved to Chile last year in pursuit of new opportunities (though if she was also escaping the Icelandic winter, we certainly can’t blame her!) But now she’s back and will no doubt shake things up in Austria, Hera style.
The Icelandic diva has taken to the Eurovision stage three times before – twice as a backing singer in 2008 and 2009, and as a solo performer when she sang fan favourite “Je ne sais quoi” in 2010.
News site MBL.is reports that Hera will join national final runner-up Friðrik Dór and two other backing singers on stage in Vienna, but Hera will also serve as the vocal coach for Team María.

As we reported earlier, María’s two dancers from the national final were dumped, and now it becomes clear why. With the dancers gone, this creates space to have the four backing singers joining María on stage. With the slick video for “Unbroken”, it looks like Iceland are putting a lot of effort into their entry this year.
Welcome back, Hera! We at Team Wiwi have missed you. What about the rest of you guys?
Friðrik, Maria and Hera is going to be one hell of a team in Vienna. Now that she’s back in Iceland she might miss the sun, but she won’t be missing the volcanoes.
I love Hera Bjork from 2010. But Maria is super cute and I hope she reached the top 10 in the finals because she will qualify for sure!
Oh this is good news. Hera can du the high note then while the other just lip-syncs
It’s so nice to have Friðrik, Hera and María on the same stage :)))
Although those dancing girls won’t participate the show in Vienna, they’ve appeared in their music video at last 🙂
Gogogo Iceland!!!
I do love Hera Björk – maybe she can offset the really-not-good revamp.
Good idea 😉
Oh Hera I’ve been missing you so much! She should do Eurovision as a solo artist once again (and win it ofc :))!!!
Correction: Hera from 2010! Sorry!
Glad to see Hera back…she was one of my favourites from 2011! Good choice, Iceland! 🙂
