Irish singer Molly Sterling appeared on The Late Late Show where she chatted about her preparation for Vienna. She also gave a bon voyage performance of “Playing With Numbers” and revealed the five others who’ll join her on stage in Vienna.

Molly Sterling Late ShowHost Ryan Tubridy chatted to Molly along with her co-writer Greg French. Molly is clearly looking forward to Vienna, with almost Jedward-like levels of excitement. She revealed that she’d only recently remembered to get her very first passport.

Molly also said that she is excited to be appearing at the Pop Meets Opera concert in Vienna, where she’ll perform another of her songs. She’ll be sharing a stage with John Karayiannis, Nina Sublatti, Boggie, and Mørland & Debrah Scarlett, along with Conchita and opera stars.

Vienna team revealed

Molly then performed her Eurovision 2015 song “Playing With Numbers”, debuting the new arrangement of the song previously only heard in its recorded version. Molly performed seated at a piano, and was joined by a cellist (who also sang backing vocals), a drummer, a double bassist and two backing vocalists.

From the 16-year-old schoolgirl who was shocked and surprised to have won Eurosong back in February, Molly has obviously been hard at work rehearsing and delivered a much stronger and more compelling performance than she did two months ago. Ireland might not be a favourite with the bookies, but Molly is proving herself to be a hardy competitor.

The performance was absolutely fine Esceire and Molly is a superb vocalist herself. There should be no problem at all with the soundmix as it’s Austrian TV who are in charge of that.

I get the impression RTE are cautiously optimistic. It was interesting to see that both Molly and Greg were interviewed before the performance….I’m pretty sure this didn’t happen for either Ryan Dolan or Kasey Smith before their send off performance on The Late Late Show.

@Ron I actually thought the performance itself was quite good and for the first time I go into rehearsals without my heart in my mouth prior to seeing the Irish performance xD, Just turn down the backing singers ( which they should do) and it could be very impressive, she’s got a decent draw being right between two weaker songs that could be car crashes live, and if they are Molly will stand out like a soar thumb.

>@ Esceire, the problem last night was that the three girls were way too high in the RTE soundmix. THIS. The vocal mix ruined a really good performance. The harmony voice was drowning her out. And on this song, that’s a very bad thing. I still think this one is going to surprise a lot of people. I doubt it’ll trouble the top five, but it should be an easy qualifier … as long as they don’t do something dumb with the staging or costuming, like having the backing singers perched on tall chairs looking bored in the background of… Read more »

@ Esceire, the problem last night was that the three girls were way too high in the RTE soundmix. Their mics were at the same level as Molly’s, making it almost sound as if a four piece girl group were performing the song. That won’t arise in Vienna at all, Molly’s vocal will be centre stage.

But actually I thought the three girls sounded fine, especially Jessica on the left : some lovely harmonies between herself and Molly during the chorus.

@PP and @Esceire.

I think Kat Mahon would’ve gone either way as far as qualification is concerned. But we would’ve been lucky to have gotten any higher than 24th.

What I will never understand is how the Music professionals don’t see that the backing singers are killing the entry, Yet us music “un professionals” can see it clearly >:(, RTE should get some ESC fans in to do the staging, they would do a much better job 😛

She will score high among the juries. So emotional and real, unlike many others entries this year. Can’t even remember when Ireland sent something like this, pure talent.

Her backing singers are Jessica Supple (who is a singer in her own right and has released an EP) on cello plus the two other girls whose names are Naomi and Póilín.

Interesting to hear the new vocal arrangements. Jessica is clearly the main backing singer and sings the chorus with Molly.

All the best to Molly Sterling in Vienna! Hopefully she brings Ireland back into the final, its such a beautiful song and she is such a talented performer! This is the first Irish entry that I have really put all my faith in, because it is worthy to stand alongside the already popular songs of Norway, Azerbaijan and Estonia, hope she qualifies, she deserves to. Good luck Molly! Please vote for Ireland in Semi final 2, those that can 🙂
