Officials rolled out the Eurovision red carpet at Vienna’s City Hall on Sunday. And for the first time an Australian delegation trooped down it. Amongst them was SBS commentator, Julia Zemiro. We managed to pull her aside for a few quick questions, including her thoughts on the UK’s 2015 entry – Electro Velvet.

We asked if she felt there was a rivalry with the UK, and whether the Aussies were keen to beat them, she responded:

I don’t think that’s hard to do this year. So… even, you know, a lot of English don’t like the song.

Burn! Julia did caveat her damning verdict, saying “anything can happen”. She may not be an Electro Velvet fan, but she won’t object to some British points travelling down under, “if we’re good to each other, we can vote for one another… Only if you like the song of course”. Seems like Julia’s envisaging a one way street direct to Sydney.

The Australian celeb also discussed her hopes for their own entry:

“Never get cocky. I’ll be happy to not be bottom ten. That’s what I want, I don’t want to be bottom ten. Top three would be great!”

We wonder how she’ll feel if Electro Velvet end up ahead?

Julia is just being honest. The UK submitted the worst entry this year.

People don’t take this so seriously! I am British and we always have this ‘banter’ with Aussies – She is just taking her chance to slate the UK because our music industry wipes the floor with theirs 😉

Australia is so bad this year. Those celebs have an ego so big, her and Guy’s. I was irritated when he came on screen and said ”there’s alot of pressure on my shoulders cause if i don’t win we won’t be here next year blah blah”. With other words vote for us! Australia is on my 38th now, only Finland and Denmark were worser :/ but on the other side… i want the veronicas to present Australia (Big shot at winning) so… come back with them in about 5 years….

I don’t like this attitude because it comes across as really arrogant and maybe even a little mean-spirited; I like Julia a lot, so I have to say that I’m really disappointed in her.

This could only mean one thing: the UK might motivate themselves to get better just to prove Julia wrong. Move aside the mindset about the contest as a joke to them. They better treat the contest as something they could seriously compete to.

I agree with you Max. If Guy doesn’t win, I’m blaming Julia and her cockyness. So what if these “lot” of Brits don’t like it? How do you know these ‘lot’ represent the overall judgement of the song?

Darren its a friendly rivalry.

We are largely the same people. The majority of Australians are descended from Brits. Unlike Turkey/Azerbaijan Cyprus/Greece however, it’s not a constant love in, it’s more a friendly banter, like true brothers. You tease each other a little, always try to one up the other, but deep down you are really close and do care about each other.

I don’t like the UK song to be fair, but what a bitc…

Think this is why we sent Prince Charles over to Ireland today, need to rekindle the friendship with them in time for ESC now that Australia seems like a busted flush!

Do the writers of this blog have nothing better to do but slag off the UK entry constantly?

I’m from the UK (obviously) and I’m half-half about our act but I think Australia will crush us this year no doubt!! 😀 12 points to Australia

Shes probably right though in fairness to her. It is one of the worst songs this year and if the United Kingdom was in the semis, they wouldn’t have a chance. I dont understand why Australia and the UK are so competitive with each other though on the international stage, the same in the Olympics, they are always comparing each others medals. Pretty sure the UK and Australia will both benefit from the cultural links between the two nations when it comes to voting.

I really wanted Delta Goodrem to represent Australia in our Vision! <3
She is one of my favorite singers & i really LOVE her songs! <3
Really pity that she is not that popular outside Australia…

I would be annoyed, but I utterly agree with her. She’s bang on, can she commentate with Graham Norton next year if Australia don’t compete? I mean Graham isn’t British so why not have her too? Haha!

I would prefer Guy Sebastian to go to Vienna with a ‘silly’ bubblegum pop song like the *Don’t Worry Be Happy* reminding us the ‘loser’ boy from Malaysia that managed to follow his dream in music than to be the top proffesional singer that is classified as the Australian Bruno Mars…
With this persona 7 all this non justifiable hype 4 the wrong reasons im not fan of Australia’s entry…

Well i do not like UK’s song i have it on the bottom of my top ranking but at least its better song than Australia’s..
UK ~ 36th/40 ~ 3 /10
Australia 37th/40 ~ 2,5/10

Well Australia will finish 4 sure inside the top10..
I only wait to see if Guy Sebastian will manage to win the Vision…I hope NOT…

At first….no idea who she is, but she is right. We could come up with a better song and we should but quite bitchy of her to say aloud.

Tbh Julia is quite frank with her opinions, and while that’s a reason why many love her, it can get quite annoying. I remember last year Italy was her favourite in the final (it was one of my faves too) but by the end of the performance you could tell she was so disappointed, since a lot went wrong with the audio, Emma’s voice and the very short dress. She then made no effort to hide her dissapointment for the rest of the night which was kind of a bummer… Not to mention what to me seems like the over… Read more »
