Switzerland: still searching for their time to shine

Swiss songstress Mélanie René brought amazing vocals, a fierce white dress, and several women banging on drums to Vienna. Although she ultimately finished in last place in her semi final, she won over countless new fans (and at least one cat) and established herself as Switzerland’s most famous singer of Mauritian descent. We caught up with her one night at Le Méridien hotel, where she was performing her song “Time To Shine”, along with several other of her favourites.

wiwiblogger Deban chatted with Mélanie at the event and found out about her strong British accent, how she enjoyed studying music in the UK, and her first rehearsals at Eurovision. “It is a childhood dream come true,” she says. She is the first singer to represent Switzerland’s French broadcaster since 1996.

Watch more of what she said in the video below and see all our Eurovision 2015 interviews here.

But Melanie deserved a better place

Melanie deserved a much better score than she got. I hope she isn’t discouraged by her result because she has a gorgeous voice and songwriting talent that I’d be interested to see develop.

Austria and Germany, two of the prequalified countries, got both 0 points. Switzerland came last in semifinal 2 with 4 points. Who came last in the whole competition. And I agree with Marco. Eurovision 2015 had good songs and no one really deserved to came last

I agree with the others here. For me, she was in the top 5 of her semi-final. What strong vocals, what a beautiful staging. Much better than Poland, Cyprus and even Montenegro. She deserved to be in the final and I really do hope she comes back to Eurovision in upcoming years. What a gem!

Her performance was really good and deserved to be higher than those who performed badly on the night (Iceland and Malta for example). Would have been nice to be in the final but either way, she should be proud of herself.

Agree she deserved better. I actually thought she would qualify when I was watching. But yes I suspect following Sweden was the issue here and not her performance. I also love her very British accent when she talks it is refreshing!

Well, her last place that everybody sees as undeserved (me too) just shows that you should vote for everyone you like! 🙂 then again, this year was quite strong and no one really deserved to be last… maybe San Marino just judging by their song (oh oh Ralph Siegel… what was that?!) but the two singers made the most they could out of it and actually showed a great performance. Someone has to be last, but it is by no means a shame for Mélanie and her team, since they really performed well and can be proud, which is what… Read more »

can’t believe she did so bad in televoting and jury voting. She was flawless! Maybe Sweden overshadowed her? It’s such a shame though.

I think it’s time for Switzerland to reconsider their national selection show.

Her song was one of my favorites…
She scored 6 points in televoting & 15 points in juries..
That does not mean that she was not 11th-12th-13th to most of the countries in either televoting-juries but because she couldn’t earn any point thats why she finished on that low place..
Really unfortunate that 16 from the 20 countries did not have Melanie in the top10..
4 countries had her just 10th..

She certainly didn’t deserve last place in her semi, I thought her live vocals were very strong and she gave a very good performance. It was a really tough challenge having to follow the mega-favored Sweden, and I was certain that whoever won the Swiss final this year would have big shoes to fill given what Sebalter did last year. Still, Mel can be proud that she was the first artist from the French-speaking region of Switzerland to represent her country in 19 years as well as the first representative from the French broadcaster RTS to go to the contest… Read more »

@ Exactly Nebi…
I really do not believe that Melanie finished last in all the countries or at least many of them…
The current voting system that we have really sucks & it is so unfair…

The voting means nothing. You can be number 11 on everyone’s list and still come in dead last at no points.

Still can’t believe she only got FOUR points in her Semi – she was far from the worst!
