Believe it or not, the one and only Verka Serduchka has landed herself a (very) minor role in Melissa McCarthy’s new film: Spy. In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance, Verka stars alongside Hollywood heavy hitters McCarthy, Jude Law and Jason Statham. The film has already reached the top of the box office in the U.K. and the U.S. Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton even gave Verka a shoutout!

Not only does Verka contribute a brand new song to the soundtrack of the film (see below), but she also performs her infamous Eurovision 2007 entry “Dancing Lasha Tumbai”, complete with sparkly backing vocalists and dancers. I probably need not remind you…

Verka features in a chase scene, in which Susan Cooper (McCarthy) pursues fellow spy Rick Ford (Statham) in order to warn him of a bomb placed in his backpack by an enemy agent. Verka and her entourage find themselves caught up in the chaos whilst performing outside in central Paris. As you can imagine, it’s hilarious.

Verka’s New Single — “Spy Party”

“Spy Party”, Verka’s new song in the film, is at the very least a cousin of “Dancing Lasha Tumbai”. It involves a similarly squeaky and lively instrumental, over which Serduchka sings in a robotically monotone style. It’s a tad repetitive — the lyrics mainly consist of Verka repeating the title phrase over and over again — so I don’t think we would see this amass the 235 points which Ukraine’s 2007 effort did. Nevertheless, “Spy Party” is fun, bouncy, and totally in-keeping with the film.

And it’s clear that Verka’s exposure across the pond has brought some new fans. Indeed, here’s Melissa McCarthy bopping along to Verka’s signature hit:

Even though Verka only did a minor part in the movie, she totally slayed it. Spy Party may not exactly be as good as Dancing Lasha Tumbai but it’s still phenomenal. I hope Spy Party gets to spend some time in the Billboard Hot 100 soon (for those who don’t know, you can actually buy an individual song in the Spy official soundtrack on iTunes – same is true for most albums sold in there).
