In her new single 99, Spanish songstress Ruth Lorenzo reminisces on past love. Everything here smacks of autobiography — from the raw emotion in Ruth’s voice to the vivid personal details scattered throughout the song. “I remember the room when we kissed and the way you were biting my lip,” she sings. “…and we kiss like we’re sixteen” (the same age Ruth was in 1999).

The pulsating build up to the first chorus almost feels hormonal. The deep beats and pumping sounds capture that overwhelming sensation of young love and sexual awakening. It showcases Ruth’s power to tell stories and elevate pop beyond the disposable. Like Katy Perry on “The One That Got Away”, Ruth has dreamed up a number that’s catchy and meaningful all at once. She conjures up nostalgia, but also the glint of pain that comes with it.

99 lyrics — Ruth Lorenzo

I remember the first time we met
I was running late again
I was covered in glitter
You were wearing your glasses
I didn’t hear a word you say

[Verse 2]:
I remember the room when we kissed
And the way you were biting my lip
When I see you smiling you still got me flying
You give me that butterfly effect

[Chorus]:
It’s like 1999 again
And we kiss like we’re sixteen and then
We drive to that John Legend song
And we dance without no music on

It’s like 1999 again
And we’re drunk on love with no regrets
And we’re up until the break of dawn
And we dance without no music on

It’s like
1999, 1999, 1999
It feels like, it fells like
1999, 1999, 1999
It feels like, it feels like

[Verse 3]:
I’m a super mess when I drink
Always trying to get you to sing
We were up on the roof top
Taking our clothes off
We were the only ones awake

[Verse 4]:
I know you like it when I put up my hair
And I’m in love with the shades that you were
From the very beginning you still got me spinning
You give me that butterfly effect

[Chorus]:
It’s like 1999 again
And we kiss like we’re sixteen and then
We drive to that John Legend song
And we dance without no music on

It’s like 1999 again
And we’re drunk on love with no regrets
And we’re up until the break of dawn
And we dance without no music on

It’s like
1999, 1999, 1999
It feels like, it fells like
1999, 1999, 1999
It feels like, it feels like

[Bridge]:
I remember the first time we met
I remember the room when we kissed
When I see you smiling you still got me flying
You give me that butterfly effect
I remember the first time we met
I remember the first time we met…

[Chorus]:
1999, 1999, 1999
It feels like, it fells like
1999 again
And we kiss like we’re sixteen and then
We drive to that John Legend song
And we dance without no music on

It’s like 1999 again
And we’re drunk on love with no regrets
And we’re up until the break of dawn
And we dance without no music on

It’s like
1999, 1999, 1999
It feels like, it fells like
1999, 1999, 1999
It feels like, it feels like

[Outro]:
I remember the first time we met

total lack of originality
its suspiciously similar to Out of the Woods from Taylor Swift.
Even the name..99… like the name of the Taylor´s album 1989.
The song is good, I like though, but like Heros from the winner of Eurovision it sounds like already heard

It’s a very effective song because it’s got all the right hooks in the verses and the chorus, both lyrical and musical, that you immediately want to get on that carefree emotional roller coaster like there’s no tomorrow and that you can always ignite that sparkle you thought was lost ages ago.

Ok song…Not good but it was nice listening to it at least one time..
I have liked all these songs that i listened from Ruth Lorenzo & her new album..
Back in 1999 i was 12,5-13+ years old…Ruth is 2-3 years older than me…That year Sweden had won again the contest & next year in new Millenium 2000 the Vision was about to get hosted in Stockholm’s Globen the same stadium arena that will host again our ESC <3
I was at her age in 2002 when i first watched the EuroVision in TV <3
