In 2006 Finland won the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2015 they crashed out of the semis. This is a country that knows the highs and lows of ESC, and today the race begins to determine their next contestant with the opening of song submissions for Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2016, the Finnish national selection.
This is the fifth time Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (Contest for New Music) is being held. The format of the Finnish selection changed in 2012 when producers did away with Euroviisukarsinta. The new format was intended to find the best Finnish song, not merely the best song for Eurovision. As such, UMK targets new talents and younger artists than the previous format did.
According to the rules of UMK 2016, the contest will run in several phases. First of all, potential contestants must send in their application and submission by September 8. YLE will evalluate all of the entries and, on January 12, announce which of them will proceed. Then come the live shows where a jury, alongside the public, will decide on the 2016 representative for Eurovision.
