Our Wishlist thriller continues with a country which is really successful in Eurovision yet never had the chance to win or host it. We are talking about Malta.

The sunny island in the Mediterranean managed to get silver twice and came third twice. Overall, of the 23 finals they performed in, Malta placed in the top 10 13 times. But since Firelight in 2014, Malta hasn’t been seen near the top Top anymore, and alone the non-qualification of the Warrior Amber.

So who could bring the Eurovision sparkle of triumph back to little Malta? Let’s see 11 artists who would surely make the country proud again! On the list, we only included acts who hadn’t already represented Malta in Eurovision, although we would la-la-love to see some artists back (Hi, Ira Losco!) at the national selection in January. Let’s start!

1. THE QUEEN OF MALTESE – CORAZON

Corazon? Yes that name is familiar to hardcore Eurofans. Corazon Mizzi participated in the national selection of Malta five times already, even in the latest edition of MESC with her song “Secretly”. Her best position was only 10th in the final of 2012, though. But apart from that, she released an album entirely in Maltese and the people of Malta started to fangirl for her once again. She has been performing a lot lately and Eurovision would probably be a lifelong the dream. Could Corazon bring Malta back to a top position? We think so, and hearing Maltese in Eurovision would be very interesting!

2. YOUNG BLOOD – AIDAN CASSAR

If you are a fan of Junior Eurovision as well, you will know this guy. In July, Aidan Cassar participated in the national selection for Malta in JESC 2015 and showed his talent on stage with a Maltese song. Aidan will turn 16 in December and is officially able to participate on the ESC stage. Why not trying it already? He particpated in the Junior Sanremo Festival successfully and is already a name in Malta. He also took part in the Ultimate Artists Masterclass this year and became one of the 12 finalists from 43 singers. Nadav Guedj showed that young blood has a good chance – why can’t Aidan Cassar show that too?

3. NOSTALGIC RYHTHM – THE NEW VICTORIANS

Girl power always makes Malta proud, so why not send two girls together? The New Victorians consists of the sisters Bettina and Philippa Cassar and are the new stars in the Maltese music scene. With their smooth and sweet voices they have won a lot a hearts and could manage a great position in Eurovision. The duo has already performed in some festivals, and seem on track for a successful career. Right now the girls are working on new music and shooting music videos. Why not representing Malta in 2016 then? Roll on, girls!

4. THE VOCAL COACH – PAMELA

Yes, Pamela Bezzina works as a vocal coach and loves her job. That is one reason why we want to see her finally make it to Eurovision. Pamela tried her luck already five times, placing fourth in 2010 as her best position with her song “Hold On”. She is coaching students at VocalBooth studios, as a tutor together with Glen Vella, the Maltese representative of 2011. Pamela is also the founder of the Animae Gospel Choir and she was even part of the team behind Amber this year. In 2014, Pamela participated in the national final of Malta with “Take Me”, and showed once again how good she is. This lady is so ready for Eurovision and Europe is ready for her!

5. THE OTHER BONDIN – NORBERT BONDIN

Amber Bondin was 2015, Norbert Bondin maybe 2016? Yes guys, there are more Bondins over in Malta and Norbert is a contender for Eurovision for sure. He started his career in the Teen Singing Challenge on a weekly show in Malta. The 22-year-old already has years of experience in the music scene, has performed at various music festivals and contests, like Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, and his single “Find a Way” is played in several radio broadcasters lately. Norbert has not yet competed in a national selection yet, though we are sure that he would have a good chance to do very well, and also make Malta proud in Stockholm!

6. RYBAK’S SECRET WEAPON – FRANKLIN CALLEJA

If this name doesn’t ring any bells in your head then you aren’t a Eurofan at all. Franklin Calleja is one of the most successful artists on the island. He already participated three times in MESC, the first time in 2013. His last appearance was in the 2015 selection where he performed “Still Here”, a song written by Alexander Rybak, which placed fifth. Frank won a casting show in 2012 and since then he is a solid part of Malta’s music scene. He did many covers together with other Maltese singers, is a tutor of the famous La Voix Academy and with Alexander Rybak, we are sure that he could win the next national selection.

7. THE SINGING POLICEMAN – KURT CASSAR

First a singing doctor in 2013, now a singing policeman in 2016? Yes, Kurt Cassar is a policeman and singing is his big passion. He started singing when he was young and competed in several music festivals and competitions like Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza. Kurt won the award for “The Best New Found Local Talent” and was shortlisted as one of the 45 artists of the 2015 national final. He also has a contract with an music label in London, took part in the X-Factor UK and currently he is taking part in the popular Summer Hit Song Contest. All is set to go to Eurovision, we reckon.

8. X-FACTOR CHICK – SIMARIA GALEA

Simaria Galea is 20 years old and already knows how music industry works – getting seen as much as you can. The talented girl has already competed in many music festivals like Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza and Talent Stabilit and she even won the last edition of Cantarigo, a well known music contest in Italy. Lately she is competing in the X Factor edition in Italy and things are looking very good for her. She is also a very caring person and is in her last year studying to become a nurse. Such an individual talent as Simaria is ready for Eurovision and maybe we will see her soon on our favourite stage in Stockholm!

9. MALTESE ROCKER – RED ELECTRICK

Red Electrick is a big name in Malta and it’s no wonder why. The band started their career in 2009 with their debut single “The End of it All” and haven’t stopped. The five men behind Red Electrick come together with different skills and with their indie-rock, ’70s-influenced music they create one good song after one another. The band also was nominated for the Best Band and Best Song in the Malta Music Awards. Red Electrick even performed on the famous Isle of MTV. With their song “Young Again” they got all the love from the country. Best qualifications for Eurovision and for Stockholm!

10. PURE POWER – CLAUDIA FANIELLO

Now, if you don’t know who Claudia Faniello is then we are  sure you don’t have anything to do with Malta or Eurovision Selections at all. Claudia is the sister of Fabrizio Faniello who represented Malta in 2001 and 2006. She is the singer who was the most times the favourite of a selection in Malta without any victories yet. Her first appearance on the national selection was in 2006 and until 2013 she was part of it every single year. In 2008, Claudia placed second and third despite being the favourite. In 2012 as well, she managed place second once again with her song “Pure”. For two years we have been waiting for her to come back and finally win it. Stockholm 2016 is ready for you, Claudia!

11. A MALTESE IN SWEDEN – KEVIN BORG

Kevin Borg would have the shortest way to Stockholm – he lives in Sweden! He rose to fame by winning the singing competition Idol in Sweden in 2008 just a year after he moved there. Kevin started his national selection career in 2006 followed by another attempt a year later. Then he started his career in Sweden and didn’t participate for six long years. His album “The Beginning” reached No.3 in Sweden’s charts and was certified gold. In 2013 he came back to the national selection in Malta with the song “Needing You”. Kevin was the fan-favourite but in the end he ‘only’ came second behind the singing doctor, Gianluca Bezzina. Since 2013 it has  become silent around the singer. BUT Kevin has recently been in the studio (maybe recording a new song?) and could bring Malta back on top in his second home Sweden. Give it a shot, Kevin!

Malta is such a tiny island but with a lot of talent and stunning voices. Of course there are dozens more singers who would make Malta proud in Eurovision, but we sadly couldn’t mention all of them. It’s maybe that Mediterranean sunshine that gives Maltese people all this talent.

Who would be the best representative out of these 11 acts? Have we left anyone out? Leave your comment below!

Methinks Chris Grech is due to win this thing soon; and I DO mean soon.

If Jessika can come up with a song like “Hypnotica”, and keep her voice together, she may yet get her shot on the ESC stage.

Something fresh and current like Norbert, Daniel testa or Aidan Cassar. Simaria’s style would be amazing for the contest! something like l’amore e’femmina.. So my tops from this list for esc will be: Corazon, Aidan Cassar, Simaria Galea, Kurt Cassar, Claudia Faniello, Kevin Borg, The new victorians & Pamela.( Franklin would either be very very good or not a qualifier). I do see Malta winning someday

@ Well i definitely see 100% Malta winning the Vision in the near future..
The Maltese have never won the ESC yet so its definitely on-safe bet 4 them to win eventually..
They hosted a great Junior Vision last year so they can definitely make an amazing EuroVision as well..

Oh man, there are so many talented singers and musicians in Malta it’s almost ridiculous! Jessika, Lawrence Gray, Trilogy, Karen DeBattista, Wayne Micallef, Corazon, Pamela, Raquela, Dorothy Bezzina etc… There are enough material to make several of these lists!

My biggest wishes (yes, a little silly) are Amber (again, with a more fitting song), Claudia Faniello and Eleanor Cassar, they are all great and I’d love to see them perform on the Eurovision stage. 😀

MALTA has to win at last in our Vision! <3
Hopefully this scenario will happen on this upcoming new Vision or very soon! <3 🙂
I really had thought that Malta had chances of winning with Amber this year after i heard her initial first remastered version that was winning material <3
But really pity that it all went down down down 4 her when the live shows came & she did not even qualify to the grand Final alone!

Is this article a joke?

I thought it is a song contest not a popularity contest!

There are lots of other talented singers on the island worthy of representing Malta, if they have the right song! Some names, make sense but others are a big joke!!
