It’s been a while since Cyprus confirmed its participation at the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest. Following a recent statement from CyBC’s vice president, hopes were high that the marathon-length national selection process the Eurovision Song Project would return. (FYI: this was one of the most successful programmes ever held on Cypriot television, with a huge amount of social media interaction). But today the situation seems much different, as Cypriot sources are reporting that Aphrodite’s Island will most likely select its representative internally.

According to ShowTime-cy, the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation will bypass a national selection in favor of a behind-the-scenes selection. Besides choosing a song and act to build upon John Karayiannis’ unexpected success last year, CyBC probably wants to save a little money in the process, too.

In some ways this was expected. The TV channel has not yet announced an open call for songs, while the song selection process in Denmark and Sweden is already closed.

Asked about Showtime-Cy’s report, Ms. Evi Papamichael, the HoD for Cyprus, tells wiwibloggs that “there is nothing to announce.” That’s neither a flat-out denial nor a confirmation, so it looks like we’ll just have to wait and see…

Nothing wrong with an internal selection when times are hard financially. It’s a fiscally sound move and just like Israel in 98′, Austria in 2014 and Luxembourg in 83′ to name a few actually won the whole thing, you can never say never…although Cyprus should probably get some high-profile foreign backing if it wants to make some headway.

They should pick Ioanna Protopapa! Her song was the best in the selection!

I love Cyprus, but if they send another Sheeran’s awful copy, they mustn’t qualify thus time… Seriously, when Giannis qualified, I thought about Malta… Cyprus in and Malts out? Please Cyprus, send a good song this time.
