In the run-up to Eurovision 2014, Conchita Wurst fans couldn’t stop describing “Rise Like a Phoenix” as a Bond-like anthem worthy of the big screen. Now, with the next Bond movie Spectre set to debut in the UK on October 26, a petition is circulating to get Conchita’s latest song — “Where Have All the Good Men Gone?” — on the big screen.
As Pink News reports, it follows the lukewarm reception to “Writing’s on the Wall”, the film’s anthem, which was penned by Sam Smith.
Nick Duffy, an editor at the newspaper, started the petition (in a personal capacity) on Change.org yesterday. It has already attracted nearly 1,800 signatures. Here’s what it says:
By now, you’ve probably seen the reaction to Sam Smith’s new Bond theme: It’s not great.
In fact, to use the words of random Twitter users, it’s “unlistenable” and “utter s**t”.
You don’t want another Jack White and Alicia Keys. Nobody wants Jack White and Alicia Keys.
You know what would make a great Bond theme instead? Conchita Wurst’s new single, ‘Where Have All The Good Men Gone?’
I mean, come on. You don’t need me to sell this to you – she’s a bearded Austrian drag queen who SCREAMS glam. It’s Shirley Bassey all over again!
And just listen to the track! (THAT’S how you do grandiose orchestrations, Sam. You’d probably know if you’d spent more than 20 minutes on yours).
So, dear world, let’s rise up: Conchita Wurst for Bond theme, 2015
Speaking to wiwibloggs, Duffy explained the enthusiasm behind his petition.
From the moment Conchita first came on stage at Melodifestivalen, she’s had Bond written all over her. She’s got the style, she’s got the glam, and she can hold a note like Shirley Bassey.
Sam Smith is a great artist, but his song just isn’t up to the job. It’s time to send a message, and hand it to a true diva – justice for Conchita!
What do YOU make of all this? Is #WHATGMG worthy of Bond?
As already been mentioned, some fans really are naive and delusional. No way Conchita would ever be Bond-singer, or even considered.
Who are you kidding?
“From the moment Conchita first came on stage at Melodifestivalen”
What… did I miss her career start in SWEDEN???
yeah, no…
Conchita should have been chosen in the first place. She would be perfect to usher in a new, less chauvinistic era of Bond. It would also make headlines and bring them much more publicity than Sam Smith. Unlike Sam Smith, it would have been seen as groundbreaking. And we all know she can pull it off and bring some Bond glamour along with her.
Instead they went with the safe and boring choise of someone who is “credible” and already famous in America. Bland, bland, bland.
@Robyn
Ah that makes sense! I find it so strange that people generally seem to hate the song, yet they are paying to download it, and not streaming it for free.
Although the chart update does say it includes streams on many occasions, some data does not get included (Spotify figures sometimes don’t get added until the final update) . I think Sam has enough of a lead, but, anything could happen!
Still, Sam Smith’s song is better than Madonna’s “Die Another Day”.
Conchita? Wow, Yes of course, she would be absolutely purfect.
I really like “Where have all the good men gone?” but I think that Conchita, if she was going to sing an actual Bond song, would prefer to sing a much more dramatic number that showed off that powerful voice to its utmost……….
no comment. i’m here just to say that i approve the use of daniel craig image. *drool*
Completely agree with @William Adams Lee Adams on this one.
I personally do not like Sam Smith’s voice. All his songs sound the same to me and his falsetto is redundant in every song. I get that he is very popular right now so I see why he was chosen. For this Bond song, following Adele’s “Skyfall” was going to be hard no matter who it was, but at least for me, I am let done by the choice.
Errr… no thanks!
Rise Like A Phoenix was a perfect Bond theme.
This new one, not so much.
Maybe, if you scratch the lyrics and rewrite them from zero, you could still adapt the melody into a Bond theme.
Otherwise, no. Just no.
Ok…I feel kinda regret that i commented on this wiwi article..
I should better not had bothered writing anything here after all..
Why do i care so much so wanting to comment on everything & everyone?
I should maybe do something about that..
Sam Smith’s song is ok nice song but not great though..Was let down 4 me to say.. No way it can get compared with the GreAtY masterpiece *SkyFall* of Adele.. But it is descent enough & adds something new to the soundtracks themes of 007 James Bond.. I was just expecting to hear something better from him…Anyway.. It is really GreAtY though as Sam Smith makes the first ever GAY artist to sing the soundtrack theme song fora 007 bond film! <3 😀 History is made! 🙂 But to want to have this song *Where Have All The Good Men… Read more »
Hi Robyn, I am still seeing him at #1 on UK ITunes? Apparently he has sold twice as much as Justin Bieber (42,000 by Sunday). I am unsure of his position on Spotify but yes streaming could make a difference for sure. For some reason, in the UK, brand new tracks get very little streaming and get pushed down the chart, even though its free to stream and should have been an opportunity for new music. I would much rather stream new music and albums I hadn’t bought yet, rather than stream tracks I already own or had heard loads… Read more »
Sam Smith is number 1 on the official UK chart update which was published earlier today. That factors in both downloads and streams.
Umm… As much as I love Conchita, she’s nowhere near as Sam Smith! He is talented and the song is amazing! ????????
As much as I’m not a fan of Sam Smith, his Bond theme fits. It’s the next step as themes go. It’s not amazing but it is what it is.
But tbh I couldn’t agree more with “naive” being thrown around on this one. Wake up people.
Replacing “Writing’s on the wall” with “Where have all the good men gone”? Definitely won’t happen. And “Where have all the good men gone” in my opinion isn’t even suited as a Bond theme. But apart from that, Conchita would have done way better than Sam Smith did with his song, of which he said, he took 20 minutes to write – and probably not much longer to produce, because that’s exactly how it sounds. Conchita would have produced something with a very high quality. I signed this petition because Conchita is definitely the best choice, if not for this… Read more »
@Eugene, yes he should easily be the UK #1. Amazing to think no one has hit #1 with a Bond theme before. Adele’s was a bit botched as she was also released on a Friday, however as the chart was Sunday back then, her first chart week was based on just 2 days sales and it entered at #4. It was the ITunes #1 for the two days, but it had missed out on being available the rest of the week and wasn’t able to catch up. The following week she climbed to #2 . Had she released on the… Read more »
I don’t like Sam Smith, but Conchita would be a worse choice. No puns intended.
Do you know why all the good men are under the radar? it’s because they’re becoming extinct at the hands of women! In today’s culture, if you want to be an appealing and attractive male, you’d better feminize yourself and fast. Women are constantly trying to get men to look more like women by dying or highlighting their hair, be real slim and wear form-fitting clothing, get an earring, get rid of excess body hair and so on…at the same time, they don’t want their men to be wimps or ‘wusses’: They want a hybrid-man: strong but sensitive, cocky but… Read more »
For people who say the person shouldn’t have to be famous, whether you like it or not, to do a Bond theme – most of the time they want to tag a big name to the film , as in turn this helps to generate publicity for the movie itself. Adele and Sam Smith are the biggest UK names around. Also as Bond is supposed to be British they tend to pick the biggest British acts . Not always , and there have been the odd exceptions particularly during the 90s/early 00s, they had a run of alternative acts like… Read more »
It’s true, that Eurovision winners deserve to get more attention in media, and abroad. Especially Conchita. She is so talented and she has only good songs. She is amazing person too. She should be on everybody’s lips.
I really don’t think “WHATGMG” would work for James Bond. It might have the right sound, but the lyrics implying the man in the song “still lives with mum” etc. I don’t think James Bond still lives with mum lol.
It just doesn’t fit the suave sophisticated Bond that the movies want to portray. It’s a great song, but if you listen to the lyrics, no I don’t think they don’t suit a Bond theme at all.
The classic anti-ballad vibe is unbelievable both in and outside Eurovision …
What is next … wanting a James Bond movie to become a porn-gay-BONDage-esque movie with a song screaming “C*** ringer …. ” LOL Oh lord … paranoia paranoia paranoia … Let the “skyfall” on those wanting an upbeat song to be part of the a Bond soundtrack … because … not even God understands why.
Conchita not famous enough????? Come on!!!!! Why do you need to be super famous? That’s the whole problem nowadays everyone wants to be famous! Talent is the first and most important thing required and Conchita Wurst has it in spades! They have missed a golden opportunity here! Sam Smith will be here today and gone tomorrow! Take it from one who knows!x
I think it would be cool because it kind of helps the winners of the contest to be more succesful. If a eurovision winner will sing for a James Bond song they will het more famous.
uughh sam smith is soo overrated y’all..
naive and delusional, that’s more or less it
Sam Smith’s song is amazing. He is one of the best european singers. Conchita’s fans are a bit naive. I feel little ashamed. Conchita will not sing a bond theme, and that’s it. Deal with it. She could sing next Bond theme or some other theme?
Sometimes Eurovision fans can be just stunningly naive …
my favourite bond songs are
license to kill by gladys knight
and
the living daylights by a-ha..
skyfall was soo overrated
Tbh, I’d second this. I had high hopes but I just really do not like ‘Writing’s on the wall’. I mean, whoever followed Adele and Skyfall was gonna have a tough time but this is sub par.
I actually like Sam Smith’s contribution. It’s not the best Bond theme but it’s a good song.
The whole thing with Conchita will most likely stay hard-core fans and gay men’s wishful dream. She’s not famous enough to be there.
A day after my birthday?! I’ll consider it a late present from good old Conchita, if they do change it which THEY NEED TO ANYWAY.
I agree with Nick, that would be a phenomenal good choice for #Bondtheme #Spectre, sung by Conchita Wurst – with a great sound, swing & lyrics too.
“Where have all the good men gone” #WHATGMG
I have already signed the petition, mentioned in the above article.
