Chisinau calling! Today TeleRadio-Moldova (TRM) has confirmed Moldova’s participation in Eurovision 2016. The little country always goes big on eccentricity, so naturally we are delighted.

Once again they will stage their national selection O melodie pentru Europa, with the final slated for 27 February 2016. All entries must be submitted to [email protected] by 7 December. We already know that Sasha Bognibov — he of “My Lesbian Girl” and “Wounded Swan” fame — will submit an entry.

Foreigners need not apply. This year TRM has instituted a rule stating that you must have Moldovan citizenship to take part. That means last year’s representative — the Ukrainian Eduard Romanyuta — can’t reapply, nor can Britain’s Kitty Brucknell, who generated a lot of headlines when she advanced to the semi finals last year.

On 10 December, an internal jury will select up to 50 songs for a live performance round, to be held on 19 December. It’ll be streamed live, so get comfortable. The top 24 songs will make it through to the two semi-finals, to be held on 23 and 25 February. The top 7 acts from each heat will advance to the final as a result of a jury-televote split. The public will have the chance to “save” an eighth act, meaning that 16 will compete in the final.

MOLDOVA: NICOLETA NUCA

We’d love to see Nicoleta Nuca on the big stage, and we recently featured her in our Wednesday Wishlist. Here’s what we had to say:

I’m sorry to all you fans of quirky Moldovan trumpet-pop, but this is someone I need to share with y’all. Young, beautiful, and possibly the best vocalist in the whole of Moldova, here is Nicoleta Nuca. She burst on to the scene during last year’s X Factor Romania, emerging as a frontrunner to win the whole thing. Alas, she finished a disappointing fifth. Despite that, her debut single, “Nu Stunt” (which was Moldova’swiwivision entry), became a mega-hit. What’s most important, though, is that you watch the video, which boasts an impressive 10 million plus hits. The vocal experimentation, striking image, euphoric violins – who does it remind you of? That’s right ladies and gentlemen, we may have just found ourselves a Moldovan Loreen. Get in there quick Thomas G:Son!

@mocosuburbian: After what happened at the last O Melodie, and the disaster in Vienna that resulted from it, I can’t blame them for tightening the screws on the entry rules. So, don’t be surprised if many of the acts (Sunstroke among them), who were blindsided or even hoodwinked by the final outcome, try again this coming winter.

I hope they choose a little wiser this year, Romanyuta was an embarrassment

I’d love to see Pasha back too, either as a songwriter or even singer himself. After reaching 11th place in the final twice, I’m sure he wouldn’t have any problem to get Moldova back to the final.

Wait no, Luminita’s from Romania. Sorry for that. I meant to say we need Sunstroke Project back for Moldova. Damn why did I confuse those two. Probably because both of them got robbed of their chance to represent their countries at the Eurovision this year.

After her experiece on the Romanian Voice, I’d love to see Aliona go again. Maybe in a duet with Pasha.

Sunstroke Project should try again, I still think “Day After Day” was robbed – it was such an awesome song
