This afternoon the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — travelled to Kyiv to devour a delicious chicken kiev at Mykhailiv Square. While we were there we decided to review Anna Trincher‘s Junior Eurovision 2015 track ‘Pochny z sebe’ (Start With Yourself). Did we think Anna’s rock sound will send her to the top of the scoreboard, or was it just a little too mature for the junior contest? Read on to find out…

UKRAINE’S JUNIOR EUROVISION 2015 SONG

‘POCHNY Z SEBE’ REVIEWS – ANNA TRINCHER

Robyn: This reminds me of Portugal’s entry in ESC 2015 — but way better. It has a cool rock vibe and Anna has great rock chick style. If the national final is anything to go by, this song will have super dramatic staging and generally be amazing.

Score: 7/10

Angus: Anna is just something else. Her track is serving Lana Del Rey, Gwen Stefani, Fergie realness and she oozes maturity beyond her years. In a kids contest that’s an equal advantage and disadvantage, but I like the finished result. She should smash into the Top 5 with this but televotes might end up holding it back. I think it rocks, so she gets top marks from me.

Score: 10/10

Josh: I am a huge fan of Ukraine in both the adult contest and Junior Eurovision, and Anna Trincher’s entry is no exception. Admittedly this song is quite mature for the junior stage, but its rocky vibe makes it sound out from the pack. Paired with Anna’s exceptionally strong vocal, I can see this placing quite high on the scoreboard. And in true Ukrainian fashion, she’s a gorgeous young lady who knows how to work a wind machine. Hopefully the song gets a little tweaking as the current ending is a little abrupt but still a solid effort!

Score: 8.5/10

Marek: This year Ukraine has a beautiful song with really good lyrics. I’m glad my neighbour is sending it. This song could win but it might just be too good for JESC — it is on a different level. JESC songs are usually catchy and simple so children can enjoy them. This is not that kind of music. It’s a strong song with a powerful message. I hope the best for Ukraine, even if Albania is my favourite this year.

Score: 10/10

Renske: I really like this song, but I feel there’s something missing at the same time. It’s probably because I think this song is a bit too mature for Anna. If you told me this song were the Ukrainian entry for the adult contest, I would believe it. Anyway, the song has a strong message and Anna is made for the stage — she can’t do bad!

Score: 8.5/10

Deban: A rock offering with pop sensibilities, Anna belts “Pochny z Sebe” from the depths of her soul. That authentic delivery will appeal to most demographics. Her raw vocals are perfectly suited to this bi-lingual track. I expect a Top 3 finish from Ukraine, who have been deeply missed at the mother contest.

Score: 9/10

William: Start with yourself kids? No, start with your vocals — just like Anna! Mature delivery, a raw yet refined sound, a killer dress — Anna is bringing it. This is slightly more mature than I’m fond of at JESC, but no matter: Anna delivers it in a convincing and accessible way.

Score: 8.5/10

Really hope that the love Slovenia gets this year translates into points, because last year’s masterpiece (imo the best ever jesc song) was criminally underrated. Anyway I think that Malta and Armenia will be fighting for victory if they give spectacular performances, cause they’ll do really well on the televote and they’ll get the approval of the juries. Slovenia a close third with Serbia following. Georgia comes fifth with Bulgaria Australia and Ukraine all closely following or surpassing one another. I think San Marino and Russia or Albania will round out the top ten. Even Belarus might be in the game… Read more »

At this moment Australia looks like clear winner in Junior Eurovision. Their entry is definitely most tight.

The song will obviously get a revamp because the version showed so far feels ‘incomplete’. I am confused by the angelic dress trail a-la-Sertab in contrast to the somewhat mutinous lyrics and dark vocals, pitch perfect as they may. There’s something about the melody that makes it sound incoherent to me. 6/10 for now.

Good ranking from the jury, I didn’t expect it! personally I love the song, it’s my second. Fantastic vocals, a nice build up and deep anti war lyrics is all I need and Anna and hee song offer that! 9.5/10
