For several days Estonia‘s ERR has been flooding us with news about Eesti Laul 2016. They’re building hype — and we’re cool with that. In fact, it’s inspired us to have a listen to the first three songs to compete in Estonia’s selection, which clearly sees itself as the Melodifestivalen of the Baltics! From experimental pop to mellow balladry, the key word here is ecclectic.

I Wear* Experiment – “Patience”

First up is the somewhat mysterious song “Patience” from the (unforuntately named) group I Wear* Experiment. It has an amazing instrumental part that is touching my soul and helping my mind fly away. The lead singer says that her feet are on fire. Are you feeling the heat?

The Jingles – “Love a Little Bit”

The Jingles hope to make your heart ring with their soul guitar ballad “Love a Little Bit”. It has a sleepy, laidback vibe, but it’s clear the singers are trying to deliver a story straight from their heart. Do you love it….even a little bit?

Zebra Island – How Many Times

And now the first club mix of the year from Estonia! The curiously named Zebra Island are giving us a disco feel. Just close your eyes, chillax and let your body shake! If we ever end up on an island of zebras, we are headed straight to the club!

What is your favourite Eesti Laul act so far (November 10)?

The quality of these entries so far is better than this year’s EL as a whole (apart from the top 3 and one or two others EL 2015 was pretty mediocre). That said none really get my attention or have anything that would work well for eurovision.

Zebra Island is my fave from the first 5, it reminds me of State of Zoe’s ‘Solina’ from EL 2014, but still falls a little flat of that. The rest go from nice to boring. I’m not hearing anything special in Indrek Ventmann’s song, it’s very samey…

As an estonian, I only like I wear* experience’s “Patience”. I think that The Jingles and Zebra Island’s songs are too boring and there were better songs that deserved to be in the top 20, for example, Elisa Kolk’s song “You Did It”, how the hell did she not make it? I don’t get it.

All 3 songs are from high quality and could be heared at a mainstream radio in the USA.
I like How many times best, it could be a hit. Patience is forgettable but nowhere near bad and Love a little bit is a good choice too, very happy and calming.
